My data is in my other computer I'm working on, but If memory is correct, the OE tend to be at 0.025 to 0.030".
I concur I was around .030 ish
i found another machine shop that can cnc them for $50 cash I’m going to buzz them .010”
KDD is at lease a week out plus shipping. They told me it will be a minimum of one week before they can machine them. I thought this was some thing that you ordered and it was already reduced height. I wonder if they’re just taking the stock piston and doing the machine work himself. Either way my wife is growing impatient and this thing is going over budget. He should have them done on Monday so I can have the short block assembled. My cylinder heads should be here next week too. Then throw the engine back in the week after and cross my fingers.
There is no reason to machine stock pistons. Mahle already sells reduced height (CR) pistons, 10 under. I was looking at the catalog last night when I was trying to see if Mahle spec'd skirts for you. The goofy thing in their catalog is they screw up the metric cylinder width. Plus, my understanding is the destroked piston are made at the proper piston weight, not reduced by machining. Not that 10 is going to create an issue.

I still have an order into KDD I’ll see how long that take takes to fulfill. I just don’t have confidence in their lead times after many reports of going over by weeks or months.
the draw to machining the tops is obviously, cost $40 and that I already have them. I’ll keep both options available I just can’t wait around forever to get this thing back on the road. Summer is closing in for us.
Shaving the pistons is easy. Before giving it to them, I'd indelibly mark the pistons for the top before it gets machined off.
the last machine shop stamped them underneath and you can tell which way they orientate by the notch in the skirt for the cooling jet. Good call though!
Does anyone know if I’ll need to use different style glow plug harnesses if I end up with the Mahle 04-07 style pistons? I know I can’t use the glow plugs as they are too long on the 2003 style with an 04-07 piston.
