Coolant leak help

Well I noticed today that I have a coolant leak coming from the front to the engine by the driver side power steering pump. I’m running red coolant. I’m almost positive it’s coolant and not power steering fluid. I’ll confirm tomorrow with a bore scope so I can get into the area. It seems like the leaking from the front cover by where the power steering pump is mounted.

how bad is removing the front cover and resealing? Do I need a special tool for the front main and crank shaft pulley?

Well I cleaned it up to get some of that crud and gunk cleared up. Nothing yet going to pressure test it and drive it a bit see if I can get some leaks to re appear

well got it cleaned up, up to 190f, and I’m seeing the minor leakage against it does seem to be the front cover around the power steering pump mounting area.

Could it be the donut seal leaking down? I've had a very slow coolant leak in my for about 8 years. It's on the passenger side. I thought it was the front cover, but upon doing the oil cooler last year, I noted the donut washer was leaking. I haven't really inspected it close since. I'll do that when the weather cooperates.

To r&r the front cover you will need a seal setting tool.

Ok I’m going to get one from eBay to drive the front seal ring on and something to drive the seal into the cover.

I purchased this Ford/Mahle front cover gasket kit. It comes with JV8 sealant, where is that used? I was thinking down toward the bottom where the bed plate seal meets the front cover.

The sealant is used where two seating surfaces meet each other, in the line that is fomed in the separation of the parts to prevent a leak
A good exmple is an oil pan gasket, where the seating surface of the block meets the seating surface of the timing cover
If it doesn't have that stuff, i'm out
Also, if your seating surfacers are trashed up, you should use a thin layer of sealant too

Front Cover Gasket

The black plugs in the pic above are the bed plate seals. You are supposed to cut the sealant before pulling the front cover gasket off, otherwise you will have an oil leak. Install the Ford oil resistant sealant in those same places on re-installation. TA31 IIRC. Hopefully someone else will correct me if my memory is poor!

Removing an old front seal wear ring, if you have one (ball peen hammer method - Timken):

sweet thanks for the information. Praying my front cover is healthy and I don’t find any other issues. Do I need to lift the intake manifold to help get the top O ring installed? Some folks say remove intake, diesel tech Ron said lubed putty knife.

Well I got the cover and gasket removed. I used a putty knife to make sure I didn’t pull out the bedplate seals.

Should I replace the oil pump gears and housing? There’s some small grooves in both. The front cover looks pretty good to me. I don’t know enough about these oil pumps to say one way or the other.

I'm guessing you did not mark the gears before taking them so so they would go back in to their burnished set. New gears are not marked, and not worn in.

hey jack!

nope didn’t mark them. I ordered new gears and lpop cover. Is that ok? The cover doesn’t seem to have any deep grooves in it. The lpop gears and cover do have some grooves that I feel with my finger nail. Probably normal wear for 250,000 miles. any tips or tricks ?

Do I need to unbolt the front of the intake manifold to help get the cover back in with the o ring seal? I see diesel tech Ron has a putty knife trick on YouTube.
