In my experience, that piece would just require a little prying before it comes off the dowel. I'm finding it difficult to believe that you can't actually remember removing it.
It was removed right around the time the krylon paint party on the once beautiful diesel engine parts started. You see how that ended, there was something going on at that time
Understood. But that was the post where he laid the engine flat in order to remove the rear cover. I believe I saw the flywheel with the clutch pressure plate bolted up sitting on the trailer on page #12 of this thread, so I feel the flywheel had already been removed before it was even mounted on the stand.

I actually ended up hanging it by the turbo mount point to remove the rear cover
Is there a way to measure the depth of the dirt in the guide pin hole in the old flywheel? That dust cover seems pretty substantial and maybe you can measure the how far the pin went in on the old flywheel to see if it is missing or not? Just thinking here for ya?
M-chan,
If someone had already been in there and worked on the flywheel & clutch
could they of left this part out or used an aftermarket flywheel that
does not have the shied?
