I did this very carefully. Couldn't grab it with my fingers.
What do you suggest I mark them with

The other method would be to remove the entire front cover with the gears inside, if you are that afraid to touch them.

Scratches on very outside of big gyro


Couple deep scratches


More scratches n holes.


Inner gear has holes all the way around

Get your 12mm allen key and remove the oil pressure regulator for a closer look to see if any foreign debris made its way through.

Will the motor mount on one side (if I bolt my other hoist to one side) hold? Those bolts aren't very big.

The ideal engine stand to have used for this engine would've been the one manufactured by Norco like this one: 2,000 Lbs. Engine Stand - NORCO Industries

using these adapters:

Engine Mounting Adapter - Made in USA - NORCO Industries

This way, you could remove both the front and rear engine covers on the stand.

However in absence of that, you may just end up having to lay the engine flat on the ground upside down to gain access to the rear engine cover.

I'm hanging it from the hoist. Then maybe reinstalling the stand after removing the rear cover
