1) Americans like big vehicles. They don't like teacups with wheels on them. We drive much faster, teacup cars simply aren't as safe at higher speeds.
2) We don't have huge taxes on gasoline so that we are economically forced into buying smaller cars for better gas mileage. European gas prices are CRAZY. What? $8 per a gallon is CRAZY?I would bet if our gas got the expensive, 2 things would happen in this order; every politician would be forced out of office and people would buy smaller cars. That's basically what happen when gas went from $2.50 to $4 a gallon. The part lines changed and America went smaller. Certainly that is not everything that caused the political change, but it sure had something to do with it.
3) The diesel market is a strange beast at best. Many people remember the last American car that had a diesel in it, and it was a GM product. That engine was THE worst example of a diesel, and many many people still remember it's reputation so much so that they look the other way at diesels. Also, to save money, self-service gas stations are all over the place, and diesel is one of the SMELLIEST fuels known to man. Or woman. I know it's a generalization, but many many people in business suits or a nice dress will easily go fill their car with gas. But diesel? Nope. Ain't gonna happen. A quick look around here at gas stations shows almost NO full-service diesel pumps. Matter of fact, I don't know of a single one. And everyone single one has diesel on the ground around it so it clings to your shoes, the pump nozzle is slimy with it, and it ain't easy getting it off your hands.
Personal diesel vehicles are not going to catch on big here, at least without a lot of marketing and the possibility of high fuel prices.
I wouldn't say they are not going to, I see more of them now then I did in the last few years. I think the whole $4 a gallon thing has made some people rethink their bigger is better attitude. Which is a good thing IMO.
Additionally, diesel cars are just slower. Americans don't like slow cars. And while diesels may last long and be more efficient, Americans don't generally look at keeping a car much more than 5 years. Many European people I know have kept their cars for close to 20 years. Of course they tend to drive fewer miles, and take better care of their cars than Americans. If you keep your car for ever and do good maintenance on it, a diesel becomes worth even more.
I'm willing to bet, most Americans today that would even consider a diesel will stay away from them once they hear all the maintenance that goes into them. I'm speaking of diesel cars specifically. Although that is also a small reason I stayed away form the PSD, cost being the major factor.

Is that a New Yawk thing? Our pumps are clean as can be out here, and we don't have a full-service station for any type of fuel. I thought the full-service stations were gone except for Oregon where you're not ALLOWED to pump your own gas.

there are a few other states like that... I think Connecticut is like that too.

Uh, read back through about 507 pages, diesels are not slower. Show me one 0-60 test where a gas beat a diesel. Even the 1 ton dually was faster down the track than the 3/4 ton diesel...
I've noticed that too. I'll gladly buy him a one-way plane ticket back to where he came from, as long as he promises to never some back. I'm fed up with foreigners coming here that do not like anything about our country except our prosperity.
JL
Put me down for half of that ticket, plus I'll pay for another for him to take his massive beer cart...
I just have a thing for big, powerful 4 door cars. The CVPI, Marauder, G8, Charger and the old RWD Impalla SS ( and its remake thats coming out next year) are my idea of the perfect type of car.
Can't say I would not love a new 5.0 6 speed stang though....

Uh, read back through the last few pages pertaining to my post, the conversation was about diesel cars, not trucks. Show me one diesel car that is faster than it's top of the line gas counterpart.
It's fairly obvious diesel trucks are big in in America. Diesel cars are not.
14 beers and you feel fine? Wow, that's almost as far-fetched as the time you added 5,000 lbs cargo and actually got better mileage. Need I say more?
Maybe he calculated his fuel mileage AFTER drinking the 14 beers No lie though, when I was in college one of my house mates would drink a case of 24 every Friday night by himself and wouldn't even look like he was buzzing. He will probably be needing a new liver by the time he is 35 though lol.
I love America. I love American trucks and cars. I wish everything on my truck and cars was built right here in the USA w/ American steel. If I was your president there wouldn't be so much as a tooth pick imported. I would tell the rest of the world and the federal reserve to kiss my American butt.
