Another couple of steps closer. I did a fast start for a few seconds just to see and it fired like it was ready to go. Tomorrow will include a few more steps.
Question - I only had it started for a total of 10 or 15 minutes today. It's putting out some white smokes but not a lot and I only noticed after it warmed up. It was in the 30's today so it was cold. My timing is close but I will need to drive and adjust this week as time allows. I did put a good amount of RTV on the intake manifold gasket so maybe its burning off the extra gasket. At first I thought it was only the drivers side but then I noticed the passenger side as well. Reminder note, it was a fresh rebuild this past summer but coolant was leaking into the oil after the rebuild. So I pulled the top end and put new head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets. What do you think?
What comes to mine is when installing one of the head gaskets.
One side the gasket flips over it does face up, is not a lot of talk about this in the manuals.
It been to many yrs for me if that was one of the problems but I remember it blocked off the coolant
,
the engine would heat up.. I have not been on all the much to read all your posts.
So don't know if you came a cross this issue or problem putting on the heads

Yes, I was aware of the head gaskets dynamics. So that should be fine. Later I will start it again and see if I can detect any off smell in the exhaust.

You know it takes a while for coolant to finely burn up/drg up in the mufflers.
Also if the heads get mill or shaved more then .020 then to intake needs to be shaved.
I forget how much the intake has to be mill but when I bought a new intake from Edelbrock had the instructions on figuring it out

That's a good point. And yes, it could very well be just left over stuff burning off. I'm trying to be careful but I'm playing "Monday morning quarterback" on myself. LOL
I'm very happy with how the engine bay looks. Looks sharp!
Also, to everyone who is or has chimed in... I get it that it's a little like walking on eggshells when trying to help someone diagnose an engine issue over a forum. So for those of you who might hesitate about chiming in, know that I will research every thought and idea to make sure it is or is not a potential solution. So thanks for pointing me to any thread, person, YouTube, etc. I should know this weekend. Thxs -

Great thread amigo, and Kudos to all the contributors, and Kibitzers for trying to help. All you big V-8 guys have slightly different issues than the old "6" boys.. But, it is sure good to see Shade Tree, and better mechanics chiming in with possible solutions...
Pull a spark plug or two from each bank. It might not have ran enough to get a good read but look and see if any hints of burning coolant. What jets are in your carb? And idle mixture screws adjustment. Different than when it was running normal before?

Thanks... I'll give the plugs a look and see what I find. I'm going to take it for a test drive this weekend as well. I bought the Holley carb new this past summer and it was on the rebuilt engine for 100 plus miles before I took the top end off to fix the coolant in oil issue. So the card has been sitting in the garage for maybe 6 months. I would Not think that would gum up the idla mixture screws. ???
The other thing is that the white smoke is coming from both sides and if it was "A" head gasket I would think one side would be smoking not both. The passenger side back corner on the intake manifold did ride just a hair high to all 3 other corners. See those pics one page back.

Update: I was able to drive it about 20 miles and the drivers side smoke cleared up (Orich had that one nailed) and the passenger side is better. I will take it out for a longer drive this weekend. Once I put maybe a 100 miles on it I will pull the plugs from each bank and see what they tell me. I'll post pics. The "right" bank is the passenger side correct?
What I'm smelling in the exhaust fumes is maybe a little rich on the fuel side. So no coolant smell. On the fuel side I'm going to call Holley and look at the book to adjust the carb. My idle RPM is at 1,100 and I think it should be right at 650 or 700. It's a new Holley 4bl carb.

Any tips on adjusting the Holley carb?
Yes. The Right bank is the passenger's side. Which Holley is it? On the front of the air horn they stamped a "List" number. Post that so I can see which one you have. That will tell me what jets etc are in it.
