1972 Highboy Build Progress
Looks like there is an upper metal retainer and a lower metal retainer. Based on the diagram, I can not tell if they just pull apart or if they have threads.
You are correct the rubber is really bad on the rad support as well. So my lines are going to be off until I figure out the rubber.

I looked at the shaft better today and it was so close to coming apart I order a new shaft. So thanks a bunch for the tip. Shaft measures just over 20 inches so I ordered the one below which is a shorter shaft. But it will be a huge upgrade. The other shaft could have failed under some real 4x4 moves. I'm doing a couple of items in prep for the engine next week.

I do have a question about the steering column but will take a pic and post that in a bit.
See where I stuck the napkin between the wheel and the column... The shaft is removed while I wait for the new one. I the mean time, see the gap between the column and the wheel? I can push down and the wheel moves in to the column. Should it do that? or what should the reveal be? I tried to look up the specs in the manual on the steering column but no luck. Thanks for any thoughts... One step closer...

Number dummy and Jefffafa can point you to places you can by the bearing. Green Sales have been good to me and others.
Hope this helps.
What all parts are you missing? And I don't remember. Which column are you using? Did PO swap it out? Since there is a gap between it and the steering wheel I'm asking. Makes a difference on the bearing stuff bottom of column.
It looks like I can drive that small bearing at the bottom of the column up about a 1/4 inch which will reduce the gap.
Thxs for the help! Lots of work going on right now becuse the engine will go in next week as long as a couple of things line up.
My backlash is reading 0.002 in some areas and up to 0.008 in other areas. If I'm reading the dial indicator correctly. After work tomorrow I'm back on it. According to the King4x4 guys the reading should be between 0.004 and 0.009 and the readings should not vary more than 0.002. So yes I will make a small adjustment to the shims tomorrow but why are my readings so far off? Or is the backlash vary of 0.006 not that big of a deal? Thanks again guys!

My backlash is better. low reading of .007 and high of .011 ... so I have a vary of .004 ... The info I have states it should be a low of .004 with a high of .009, but it states if you have more than .002 between the readings something is wrong. ???
FYI... Great stuff. The penetrant is realy good and it will free up rusted parts big time! I had to hit some parts a couple of times just to soak in.

After... Great steering shaft... Thxs again for the help on the steering shaft!
The radiator open is 27.5 wide which I think is the super cooling. =/.zx
What are the hose part numbers for lower and upper? Where would they have in stock? I need them by saturday night. Monday 9:00 am is the plan to drop the rebuilt 390 in for action.
Thanks -
