If you put this one back in.... for the love of God put in new lifters so we can stop wondering when you'll find needle bearings in the oil No dumbazz judgement here, maybe this rebuild will take you over a million now.
Should we tell him to put in a new set of lifters AND a cam too?
I wish I would've ran it til she was dead, I'm losing all my miles if I put the new one in. Do you guys think I could replace the cam, lifters, valve train, and not mill anything. Replacing parts in the engine shouldn't make me lose my miles???? Should it? I'm proud of those miles.
The copper washer is melted to the cup. I torqued it to 26ft. I torque all of em. This is a torque issue huh? Mchan, have you seen this happen with a proper install? The injector is still under warranty.
Bare min, I should pull the head and get new injector cups huh. Are you fairly sure my lifters are what's squeaking? If I can back outta the new engine, then I could replace all the guts in this one, about how much is a master rebuild kit, does it come with the crank, cam, ect? If not, how much do u think it all would be. That is, if I can get away with no milling.
Well..... Don't beat your self up over it. The question now is
can you get out of the new engine deal. What things are you going
to do to this one and will it be money ahead at this point.
You have taken care when removing the parts and that is a good thing.
I don't know how much work is involved in cam and lifter replacement.
I do think sense your almost there that you should go and do it if
your keeping this engine. One thing that may help with deciding on
keeping it or not is if you can go a compression test with it this far apart.
If the rings are good and you have not been burning oil.
M-chan Can he do a differential leak down test to check the rings?
That way he only has to lock the crank and use the compressor
to charge the cylinders. Or will that even work on a diesel?
Not burning any oil. I could afford a fluidamper now,,,,,, maybe. I'm still putting the clutch in tho. Even tho, a part of me wants to put it back together now with no new parts and see how long she'll go. I know that would b stupid, but I'm sure lots of us would like to see her hit 6 or maybe 700k.
The first picture looks like a 3/8" drive impact driver. You put a socket on the end of if, hold it squarely against the stubborn fastener and tap the end with a hammer. Success is achieved if the fastener breaks loose.
The second picture looks like an electric 1/2" drive impact gun. Sadly, I don't think either tool will be strong enough to break the flywheel bolts loose.
The last time I was ever into a manual transmission equipped truck, I vaguely recall needing to struggle a bit with my impact gun, and it's a top of the line Snap-On gun with the highest torque rating.
I was just looking through here and saw all your posts. Can't thank you enough for all your insight. You are truly an asset to FTE. Busy day but I normally snap to attention anytime you respond to, well, anything. Btw, I didn't even use the 3/8 hammer rachet, the dewalt 1/2" did the trick.
The truck broke down on Sunday morn on I 55 in Illinois. Friday morn (2 days earlier)I delivered a trailer in Vacaville California. That chirp has been at the forefront of my attention for a while now. Just before that we took one to Vancouver island. Can't even fathom how much it would cost to get my truck to my driveway from the island. The "infamous chirp" has been driving me crazy for months now. If I stayed even 400 miles from home at any given time I would have driven til she died and not even worried. There are times I get over 2000 mi from home. Can you imagine that tow bill. I think in gonna put in the new one and have the crank n cam polished, hone the cylinders, buy the crank seal tools, and learn how to do a rebuild. I'd like to know anyways. Anyone know how many special tools are needed,,,, actually needed for a rebuild.
Oh yeah, the flywheel was one big chunk of steel. I'm guessing that's the good one? I'm trying to take pics of as much as possible. I know before I do something for the first time, it's great to see pics of it. I hope they help someone, sometime.
I'm freakin fried. Can't shut my mind off. I'm looking for crank seal tools, master rebuild kits, cams, cranks. Reading dumb azz posts on other sites. I left pmm messages to call me ASAP in the am, I gotta make a decision about the engine before its too late.
