The Chevrolet 8.1 liter engine was produced from 2001-2006 and installed in HD
2500 and larger trucks and vans, as well as motor homes, Suburbans and
Avalanches. It is similar to previous big blocks, but has the advantages of better
cylinder head and intake manifold flow than the earlier 7.4 liter engine did. It has
larger displacement from an increase in stroke. It is factory rated at 340 HP @
4200 rpm and 455 lb/ft of torque @ 3200 rpm

So, you think that the V10 in a heavier truck outperforms the 8.1 I used to tow with? I guess it could but I don't know if 25HP would be all that noticeable. The 350HP/650 lb/ft of my diesel is very noticeable.

I can not answer that, I know next to nothing about the 8.1.
how was the mpg? I hear it is worse than the V10.

Ohhh yea. Much worse. Used to get around 5MPG towing 15K. You can get around 12 if you drive empty and carefully.

I know the big gassers are monsters, not race engines, reliable and everything. I don't know anything about the V10 other than if I get out of diesel it will be the engine of choice if they still make it. Choice is based on all the things you guys say about it.

I won't say the diesel is better but it is a real nice change of pace for me.

My Dad had a Ext. Cab 4x4 2500 w/ the 8.1 (I think it was an 04) w/ 4.10s. He could get 12 mpg on the interstate if he was nice to it. Thats what I get w/ my V10 Crew Cab 4x4 w/ 4.10s

In comparison-our company's Dually-06 V10 Supercab gets 8-9 mpg pulling our excavator around on the gooseneck. Total trailer and excavator weight is right at 16K lbs. That same truck gets 13mpg running empty, but very rarely goes anywhere without that gooseneck tied to it. It's been used that way from the day we got it-never have had a single hiccup or problem with it.
Our operator was used to driving diesels when towing the equipment around, and was very skeptical of it until he drove it. He not skeptical any more. To quote him..."That's the best towing light-duty truck I've ever been in,and it's comparable to some of the medium duty trucks I've used"

Thats roughly what my V10 gets, and I don't have a very light foot.

FWIW, a few guys drove my V10 in the last week or so why we did the Air Ride Suspension. They owned Duramax's and PowerStrokes. All were very complimentary of the power my V10 made.

I love my 265 hp V10 for towing that much, so I can only imagine the 362hp V10!
I wander how hard a swap would be......

how many hp does the duramax make? I thought it made more than even a 3v V10.
( I may be wrong )

You know I'm not too sure what the new ones make. I think it is more than my 3V V10. His had a BullyDog tune on it, it was no slouch.
To clarify though, he didn't say mine could outrun his or anything like that, just that he thought it ran really good. Seems like everyone I know that snubs their nose at these 10's changes their tune real fast once they've had a chance to drive them.
