Starting Point
Actually the plan was for the 2 micron first, then the Wix just before the pump which if I recall correctly is also a 2 micron. Hoping that the spin on will do the heavy lifting of the filtration.
OEM will remain in the bowl to catch the finer stuff.
Battling a sinus infection that is so bad I went to the dentist thinking I had an abscess tooth. After their X-rays she asked if I had sinus issues.
Im on antibiotics, Advil sinus, and a nasal spray, it’s starting to respond.
Didn't get anything done on the truck today. Tomorrow is another day.

I'd argue strongly against a 2 micron filter first. Any and ALL the crud that goes into your tank will be caught there. It -will- clog. Large size will delay clogging but not cure it. Plus it is opaque, cannot see the insides.
Best design imo is a 50 micron (it's not 2) strainer like your WIX 33972 to protect the fuel pump. And you can see the filter easily on the frame rail to check for contamination.
After the pump is protected let the OEM filter in the fuel bowl do the fine sifting to protect the engine. Nothing more is needed.
I have a Racor on the shelf for the prepump strainer duties cuz it's way bigger than the WIX, but I'm still running the same WIX strainer as you for several years now just fine. The Racor sits on the shelf because I don't need it yet.
Not lazy! No!

It seems that somehow in my head I had assumed the larger the # the better the filtration. I am now informed and will be finding a larger than 2 micron spin on filter.
Additionally ‘my forgetter is getting better’ and you are correct on the 33972 being a 50 micron.

I take 800 mg of "Mucus Relief" every day, which is Guaifenesin.
makes a huge difference... ( what it does in addition to the chest, is it drains the sinus passages, my Eustachian tubes are blocked from birth. )
Guaifenesin is used to relieve chest congestion. Guaifenesin may help control symptoms but does not treat the cause of symptoms or speed recovery. Guaifenesin is in a class of medications called expectorants.
my ENT also told me to use Fluticasone Propionate nasal spray, once to the outside of the nostril each morning. Makes huge difference for me.
you have to shake it up a bunch, before you use that stuff, the goodies float to the bottom

Also found a BF979 which is a 25 micron but that wouldn’t arrive on time for me to be completed repairs before our next trip.
As it is I’m cutting it close if I need to replace the fuel pump as well. Still haven’t flushed it out.
David, Thanks for asking the question about filter placement. It prompted me to be schooled on micron ratings.
this is the Wix Pre-pump 10 micron filter that has been on the truck for 20+ years.
the Fire Department installed it, 10 microns is not too small to restrict fuel flow, as the canister volume is huge...
most likely, it got changed out a few times, we did, only a few thousand miles on the new filter.

In my opinion, this just adds 2 connections for potential air introduction and the possibility of additional flow restriction prepump.
I assume you’re planning to leave it to provide a visual check of the fuel condition. Maybe that does outweigh the negatives. 🤷♂️

Jason, your assumption is correct. I was thinking that the clear would be a good visual aid for checking filter health.
I get where both of you are coming from in limiting connections in the fuel delivery line.
the clamps are Fuel Injection hose clamps, squeezed super tight.
It’s been raining steady since last night. Of course I opted to do the tank work outside of the shop so that I had room to work.
Rolling around on the creeper in the pouring rain ain’t no fun. Better than crawling around on gravel though.
So far I have the bracket made for mounting the filter.
Had a good look at the fuel pump and trying to decide the best method for flushing in reverse. Leave in place and swap the wires, or remove and flush on the bench. Neither looks to be a fun job.
Just inside for a coffee and update. Headed back out now.
