You have to remember that yours has much less power than the 05-10 V10s, and a tranny thats not as good.
You still have 60HP over the PSD that was sold that year.
And how much less torque than that same PSD? Are you saying that the v10 can't pull 3.73 gears? Funny, that's what mine has and it has all kinds of power!

True that...And my 6.4 has 3.55 gears and runs like a scalded cat!

I don't think jumping to 4:30s is going to make that much of an impact. Everything equal taller gears=lower topend speed. Taller gears=higher rpms at same speed. He's still going to gear search in cruise. Only way around that is to WOT. Now the gas hand is going to race to the bottom mark. Its just the nature of the beast.
Its not the case here but 01-03 7.3L closed the gap to only been 35 hp under the 6.8L of the same yrs. I don't why Ford waited so late to try to get something out of them.
Those are great gears for an engine with low RPM peak torque and peak HP.
The 5.4 and 6.8 pull the hardest at higher RPM. Running the same gears as a PSD holds them under peak power, where they hold your engines right where they want to be.
Needing gearing to match the engines RPM range does not make them weak.

The problem towing with 3.73s is that at 65, your RPMs are a little low for a hard pull. If you drop to second, it pulls hard at peak HP but is screaming.
You start gaining speed you back out of the gas when you get to the speed you want and then its back to third. Then it wants to drop to second again when it starts loosing speed.
4.30s or even 4.56s would make third a much better pulling gear.
I have run 75 towing 10,000 lbs into a head wind, and it would hold it ok but the gear searching from third to second and back again was pretty bad.
It feels like it needs a gear inbetween.
The Torqueshift is a much better towing tranny.

Not necessarily, when you factor in fuel mileage. Getting 18 or 19 unloaded compared to 13 or 14 more than makes up for the difference. When talking ongoing costs, need to factor all that in.
Back when diesel was 2.65 and gas was 2.55 here I was one of the people vehemently defending the psd when it came to fuel costs. Here lately gas has been 2.63 and diesel 3.05 here, so my psd hasn't seen the road in 3 months.

Having a lot of low end torque just means you can do the same work in a higher gear and at a lower rpm. My 7.3 has a lot more tq than my 5.4, but my 5.4 will run off and leave it loaded or unloaded. It just isn't in the same gear or at the same rpm. Tq is important when pulling a load, but it's tq in the form of tractive force and not engine tq. Im still more than willing to get together and do some pulling any time you are up this way. Any other stock engines are more than welcome to come along too.

I can be in 3rd(same gear ratio as his 2nd) and at 60 mph mine is turning 4,500 rpm. If I run it to 5,500 rpm I can get about 68 mph out of it. I have a 4.10 and Bill has a 3.73 in his, so I see no reason why he can't do 75 mph in 2nd gear.

With all the horsies ya'll got, you shouldn't have to be in 2nd gear screaming along at 75mph....or, .75mpg.... the more laughter ya'll give me, the happier I am I bought a diesel...lol
How ya' been? You've been SLACKING as of late in your moderator input...at least on this thread....

We don't HAVE to run at those rpms, we are just saying our engines are capable of doing it. It's very rare that mine ever hits 4,000 rpm.
I have been slacking a bit the past week. I had an unfortunate event happen at home that required me to spend some time in the emergency room, so I haven't been online much. I go back to the dr tomorrow to see if I am going to need surgery. If I do, you all may be hearing quite a bit from me as I am confined to the couch for about a week straight lol.

Bill said he had to be in that gear...
Sorry to hear your wife whupped your butt and put you in the emergency room. (kidding) Hope all turns out good
