I don't know if ATF will do anything to the rust.
I know a 50/50 mix of ATF & Acid tone works pretty good on rusted motors but it's more like WD40 than eating rust.

I would have tried Evap o rust as that east rust.
Molasses also eats rust.
Thing is to use evaporust it can't have any oil on it.

Vinegar also works for "mild" rust.

I have heard about the ATF / acetone mix to penetrate rusted bolts & nuts, etc, but in that case it's the ATF doing the work and the acetone thinning it enough to seep into the threads. You can also dilute it with kerosene instead of acetone.

When you search the internet for threads on using ATF to eat rust, you always find one guy saying "hey this works great" and somebody else commenting "I tried it and it doesn't work". So I'm just gonna try it here with the torque wrench and see how it goes. It still works, so it's just basically outside surface rust, although it is fairly pitted.

When i was trying to free my frozen pistons i used a mixture of atf, acetone, diesel fuel and pb blaster. Unfortunately none penetrated the rusty rings. Blocl of wood and dead blow hammer freed them when i got the head off.

How long did you let that mixture sit? Some people have said a week or more for it do the job. I guess you had to pull it apart and re-hone the cylinder and get a new set of rings, right?

Was sitting in there close to 2 months. Was trying daily with the kickstart lever but never budged.

They actually they came out clean. (No scoring i mean.) I was tearing it down for a full rebuild anyways. Pistons were still good as were the bores. But yeah did need to replace the rings since i had to knock them outta the grooves in the pistons. Which came out in bits and pieces.

What I've been working on the past few days:

Old Mustang bumper I got from Bob. Someone in his neighborhood was tossing it, so he snagged it and passed it on to me. Originally I was going to cut it and section it and try to make it fit the contours of my Chevy LUV, but since that project is long gone, this bumper was just sitting out back of my shop doing nothing. But I have an idea for it..

The old top from my work bench is like particle board with formica on both sides. A 4x8 version of what you might make a cheap countertop out of. The front edge was pretty moisture damaged, but the back side and the underneath are not too bad.

So I laid out the Mustang bumper and created a cardboard template. Only needed to do one side, then just flip the template for the other side.

After cutting it out, it looks pretty good and you can see where I'm going with this.

I had to do a little trimming here and there to be able to slide the bumper into place, but voila! It fits.

This time, I'm painting the edges to help lessen their exposure to moisture.

Looks good, and I have drilled holes for my 4 bumper bolts.

I had several of these brackets left over from when I was putting up shelves in my garage, they cleaned up nice, still look brand new, so I put two of them into service here. Ripped a 2x4 in half on the table saw, I think this provides more lateral support for the shelf.

Shelf goes right in to place and looks good.

Sanded and painted the backside of the bumper. I just mixed blue rustoleum and silver rustoleum. I figure this seals the rust and makes it easier to run a rag underneath whenever I am cleaning.

Bumper doesn't look half bad after using a brillo pad to clean off the rust.

Fits right in place and looks good. Now I just need to go get some 7/16 carriage bolts to finish the job.

Dose look good
Make sure you wax it good or it will rust up again.

You know them shelf brackets you used, they make great racks for weed trimmers.
The half round part on the ends the round shafts of the trimmer fits right into them so they are stored up off the floor.
I have 2 trimmer power units, can change the head for trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer & edger and both have their own holder in the yard shed.

We are traveling in Montana right now in the Ex pulling the camper, haven't seen any other NC cars in a long time.

Took her without trailer in an 80 zone today in Wyoming, she loves to cruise. On the backroads running 70, going to be hard to slow down in NC.

Dont know what part of NC you are in but just outside Raleigh the speed limit is 70 MPH and you know no one is doing 70!
Heck I had a Dr. apt. and had to get on I40 and I was doing 75 - 80 MPH! I even took the truck up to 85 just to see what the RPM is, 2200 in over drive, and backed it down to 70 - 75 MPH.

I dont mind running the truck that fast as I do have over drive, 2.75 rear gear and the 300 six pull's pretty good at the lower RPM's
70 MPH is only 1800 RPM that is the same RPM in direct drive at 55 MPH.
