Dave ----
That 7-11 is basically any weekday, because I get off work at 7am and go lay down for my nap. I am normally up by 11am.
I do have 2 good mirrors though and I am happy to help you out.
If it will undo from your bracket. If not not a big deal I just have to find the time to order 1 from LMC. Maybe later tonight if I dont nap before bed LOL
Ok got you on the time so some time after 11am Thru I will swing by.
Think all the parts I ordered for the bike came in,
Now that I think of it the parts I really need, carb rebuild kits, are not here yet

I got other things I can check like why it cranks over slow. Hope it is battery & cables and not a starter as I seen starters up to $150!
Then again battery is not cheap either .
What they say "if you want to play you got to pay!"
Dave ----
Pulled the carbs as I was told the bike had not been run in over a year and would not run unless the carb was sprayed so I never heard it run before I bought it.
I was told the cooling fan did not work, switch or fan could be bad?
The tank was full to keep it from rusting and it had to come off to pull carbs.
Figured pull hose off carb and run it into a clean can, gas was still good ad it was the good stuff.
Well that did not work as I got no fuel out? Open tank and run a hose in and use air hose to push the fuel out enough to pull tanks then dump the rust in the can. Once empty I pull the petcock and check into it. I dont know how it works but think it uses vacuum from the motor to open a rubber valve?
Think it was stuck as I could not blow through it before I pulled it apart but think it will work now but going to pick up new rubber parts to rebuild it.
Got the carbs off, someone has been there before as I found hoses not where they should have been?
Got the carbs apart and they were pretty clean in side. I think if they got fuel to the bowls it would have run.
Sprayed all jets and passages just to make sure they were clean.
Only thing I did not like was a o-ring that goes between the fuel bowl and body that seals the accel. pump passage looked like it may cover the brass weight?
Got the carbs back on, filled a oil bottle with gas and filled the carbs, no leaks so thats good LOL
Battery was low and would not crank it over to fast. It did the same when I looked at it and he had it on a tender so may have a bad battery?
Put a just pack on it, pull choke on and hit the stater and it fired right up but RPM went pretty high so shut it down to check & adjust things.
Next fire up idle RPM still to high and need to look into it more but I wanted to check for vacuum leaks.
I had to reuse the rubber o-rings between the manifolds and heads and they leaked damn!
And they dont come in the carb rebuild kits. I let it run a bit to the point the cooling fan should have come on and sure enough it did not.
I also checked to make sure it was charging, 14 volts so good there!
Was happy it runs and other than the vacuum leak it sounded pretty good!
Left my son's little tender charger on battery over night.
Today I got out before it got really hot but did not get much done, not because I did not try.
Beside the vacuum leak causing the high idle RPM the throttle did not have any free play so fixed that I hope.
Did I say I bought a factory service manual? I looked that over for the cooling issue, I used it for the carbs.
After pulling more stuff off just to find the temp switch so I can jump it to see if the fan comes on or not and that will tell me if the fan or switch is bad, I bought 1 of each just in case or wiring is bad. Fan is good, switch is bad and to fix either the radiator has to come out!
Got looking at the old switch and it looks a lot BIGGER than the one I bought? Because I may want to run the motor after the vacuum leak fix I did not want to drain the cooling system just yet.
Hit the hardware store for manifold o-rings, not the right size but hope 1 will work, NOPE will not work!
I dont want to force anything because if the manifold breaks I am screwed as you cant get them anymore - did I say this is a 1 year only bike!
So I got a list made up for the dealer who is closed till Tues. Need manifold O-rings and temp switch the most but want to get the tank petcock rubber parts if they can.
Think the battery may (hope) be ok as the volts were up to 12.8 before I closed up the garage and the charger was off it for 2+ hours.
I think the guy's tender either was not hooked up or not working when I went to look at bike?

Man I know about this heat, it's beating me down too. I've working in the carport on repairing and painting garage cabinets, and also working in the back yard cutting down some small trees and some large tree limbs. I'm going to have to make at least 2 trips to the landfill with the truck and trailer. No AC so I will be sweltering. And I need to have it done by Tuesday so either 2 trips today, or 1 trip today and 1 tomorrow, or 2 tomorrow. There's no upside because the heat index over 100 both days.
So i started with the rear ones figuring theyd be easier. Boy was i wrong. Was a fight tooth and nail to the end. Biggest frustration on the back?? The company he bought the parts from had the left and right sides marked backwards for the hoses. Didnt realize when i did the one side because it came with a new mounting bracket. The other side didnt have a new bracket. So when i tried to feed the line side into the old bracket the locking tabs were misaligned. Thats when i discovered they were backwards. Got that straightened out and back together. Also adjusted the parking brake while i was in there since its separate. Now it actually works. Lol.
Unfortunately i had to stop then to go pick up my fiancé from skool since the bus service canceled her pickups for today 😡. We took a detour to the grocery store on the way back. But also had to detour to our house since we bought cold stuff lol. Cant leave that in the hot car lol.
got back to the parents house to try and finish the brake job. Started with the passenger front. Wasnt really any trouble. Except i did have to go get a new tool. (Torx bit socket T-55 😡 i had a t-60 and t-50 but not the 55 😡 ) Just took awhile because of the heat. Felt like it drug on forever.
Went to do the driverside. And thats where the fun came in. Got it almost torn completely down. 1 bolt to go. Yup you guessed it. Wrench.. wrench. SNAP!!! 🤬 3 exposed threads on the bolt head. Rest of the bolt snapped flush with mounting surface. Sun setting. I was hot and tired. I said F*!&$ it threw the tools back in the garage and came home. My 1 day job has now turned into a 3 day ordeal. Since tomorrow i gotta work so cant work on it then. Ntm now i gotta get 2 new bolts. (Replacing the other mounting bolt on that side as well since the head on that one was trying to round off. Will try to finish them on wednesday i guess.
I made 2 trips the landfill today, but I still have more branches and stuff to fill up the trailer for one more load.
My friends property is being cleared, and I have to go over there tomorrow and mark out the area for his workshop so they can level and grade that area. He is in NY so I'm his eyes, ears, and boots on the ground here.
Meanwhile I had my vehicles backed up well into the driveway so that I could use the sprayer to paint cabinets in the carport, and when I went to move them back in yesterday afternoon, the tire on my car was flat! I aired it up, moved into the carport, and an hour later it was flat again. Ugh!
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Sure it was in a garage so had shade and a drum fan blowing on me but it was still pretty bad for a fat guy

Then to have the job go bad, missed marked parts and a broken bolt or a flat tire just adds to it

Tell you how bad it is I have a second day of no work. Think it's to hot to do any cement work as it would set up to fast.
You cant add more water to it as it makes it weaker and I dont think you can add enough ice to the mix, yes they do add ice, to slow the set up time.
I have a running and riding bike

Yesterday morning I hit a Honda dealer in Wake Forest for intake manifold o-rings and some other parts, only 1 ring in the whole stale in Goldsboro!
And forget about the other parts as he said he did not have them so knew where that was going.
On the way home I hit a 2nd hardware store and found some o-rings that fit the gap but needed to be a little thicker to seal so I used a thin coat of Right Stuff gasket maker (RTV) and bolted the manifold and carbs back up.
Got it running checked for vacuum leak and forgot about a vacuum line that goes to the petcock. Once plugged no vacuum leaks but the idle speed is still about 3000 should be 1000 RPM? Remembered reading about the choke and fast idle but there is no adjustment like most auto carbs.
Thinking maybe I did not put the cable back in the right place I adjusted it and got a good idle now.
I let it run to get up to temp so I could check the fan switch, I tested the fan so knew it worked, and bad switch but I have a new one from Ebay.
I was able to loosen the bottom of the radiator pull it out some to change the switch.
Testing the new switch and the fan did not come on??? In checking it just started working and has been ever since?
With that I put the tank & seat on and took a few laps around the yard.
For $900 I think it was one of my better deals

Because I have a second day of no work today I want to give the bike a de-greasing / wash and put the rest of the body panels back on so it looks better.
I also want to take it out around the block for a better test drive than the laps in the yard.
I also want to call for insurance and if I have time maybe even see about getting a plate but we will see with this heat.
Be safe everyone with this heat
Dave ----

Hope you get it taken care of with out too much more trouble.
I got insurance yesterday $151 for the year with agreed value of $6000 if it is a total lost.
It would have been $119 for basic and what ever book value is on a 1983 650 motorcycle?
I also tried to get a plate but the seller did not have it noterized so had to reach out to him to have that done.
He was able to get it signed and I got a good title to take to DMV.
Wife I think is going to try tomorrow and get a plate so I can start riding the bike.
I still need to check the air in the suspension, the diff oil and grease the drive shaft but should be pretty easy to do that.
Dave ----
Bet you don't want to see that truck for a while

Dave ----
Before doing so I got the new mirror from LMC and got it installed so I was able to take the mirror back to John.
I did that when I road tested the bike and it had a problem. It would not go over 45 MPH.
It was a hot day so when I got home I pulled it in to the house garage and I cooled off in the AC while I figured out what could be wrong.
Little later I moved the bike to my garage and I felt the exh pipes and only 1 of 2 was hot?
The bike also came with 4 plugs but did not know if new or used?
They were used, 2 black / rich the others looked normal.
So looking to do a compression test I break the plug loose and I pulled the socket out and the end is wet?
I pulled the plug and got thinking where would the wetness go when the plug was pulled???
So I cranked the motor over and it blew some vapor but nothing like I thought it should so I ran it with out the plug till no more vapor came out.
I installed a used normal plug and the bike was running like new again.
So what was the liquid you ask? I washed the bake and water got down the plug well and shorted the spark to ground.
I found out the plug well should have a drain so today I cleaned the drain & well and blew out the plug wire and checked the other side and should never happen again.
With the bike running good I took it for a 36 mile ride.
It ran great I just want to adjust the suspension & tire PSI so it rides a little softer other wise I like it.
