The spline count has to do with the spider gears inside the carrier. The ring gear bolts to the carrier so ring and pinion and spline count don't matter to each other.
Every 9" out of a 4x4 truck I've ever had apart was 31 spline, the only 2wd one I ever dealt with was 28 spline. To find out which you have you'll have to pull the drum brakes apart on one side. Once you get that off you'll see the end of the axle has the 5 wheel studs and a large hole. Behind that is a retainer and 4 nuts, stick your socket through that and remove those 4 nuts(depending on the axle could be from 9/16 to 3/4), you don't have to hold on the back side. Once those are off the axle will slide out but may take some wiggling. Then you count the spline on the end.
Like Josh said a 9" un bolts from the frontand the entire ring, pinion, carrier all comes out together.
You'll set it up like this on a bench/tailgate. This is the one I just regeared amd swapped from 3.55s to a little deeper.
Also gears are one thing if you've never dome it's better to pay someone to do. If you don't get them right they won't last long.
Ordered a couple of pizza's tonight, and Dustin stopped by on his way home after work. Took the grub down to the shop and swapped the CV joint on one axle over to the new one. While Dustin knocked out the second one, and cleaned all up I bolted the rest of the bits and pieces I could back on. The transmission ended up needing a 60$ sensor and that was it. A little computer magic and a sensor and she is shifting fine. Got a couple of same size tires mounted on the front the other day over at Dustin's place, since he has a tire mounting machine (didn't tell me it was a manual one though
). So matching tires. Axles rebuilt and new brake shoes installed on the front end, and she's back running and riding. Still just under 1500$ invested total. Next round of wrenching will be:
Adjust brakes
tie rod end link left side
Find air cleaner box lid
Install some of the plastics
make sure all the intake hoses and breather hoses are routed correctly.
I also found a crack near the back of the frame that will need sleeving, the rear rack is junk, the front grille and headlight assembly is completely MIA. The light bar was wired exactly as you would expect a light bar to be wired More butt connectors than actual wire, I think. The purist in me wants to order all new shiny plastic and take it back to OEM. But it is supposed to be a budget wheeler that I can just load up and take anywhere, any time. So we shall see. May do like I did the one ton. Beat it some more with a little jury rigging, until it's just to rough to keep going, then give it a couple of years of shop time. But we shall see. It definately needs some running time to flush out the old gas (probably ethanol in it as well).
Still, I don't know who was more excited to get it up and rolling right. Dustin or I.
Back on the 7th I got home from work by 10:30am and was not too hot so got some work done.
Started the truck and moved it out so not to get covered in body work dust. I love how smooth this 300 runs.
Brake pedal still goes to the floor but does stop so will need to look into that some day.
I used a grinder with 36 grit disc to take the hood down to metal and prep it for a skim coat of filler. The skim coat of filler is needed because when I took the skin off the frame I put little bend marks in the skin.
It also had an area that I straighten that needed a little more filler & shaping so I did that first then the skim coat.
Skim coat is on no sanding yet.

Then I removed the tail gate and started stripping it of paint & rust using a Eastwood gray disc made for this. I still have more to do with a smaller disc then will treat the gate with the acid I have for this.

Oh I also picked up another gal of primer & thinner and body filler. Should have everything but paint to get it to paint stage.
I got to get my butt out to the garage and get this finished.

So loaded it up and took it down to the creek where a bunch of friends and their kids were gathering for a kids birthday party. They had a blast riding the thing around. Though, the next thing I have to tackle is the tires. One of the drive tires is slick, and get's not traction. Of course it's the main drive tire....
I got the engine set in place and bolted down and to the transmission/torque converter.
Then Sunday I got the the headers bolted on it, temp sensor, and oil pressure lines hooked up.
Ended up "massaging" the firewall a little to get the passenger side to fit right.
I'm going to try and heat/bend the driver side a bit at the collector because it's a bit close to the transmission.
I'm currently waiting on a order to show up from rock auto. Radiator hoses, thermostat/housing. Spark plugs, wires, and some new universal joints. That's supposed to show tomorrow so I'll get on that this weekend. First um gonna throw fresh oil in it and filter on it, then I'm gonna spin the oil pump a few times just to get everything lubed before I try to start it up.
This was using the impact to prime the pump.
Got carb bolted on, new spark plugs in, spark plug wires on, and set. Then thermostat on and ready to go. So i started hanging the fenders again so I can get this thing going.
The 4th I did get out to the garage to get a little work done on my truck.
A few weeks earlier I went over the wiring for the ALT as it had not been charging. I had to make an adaptor harness as the truck had a plug and the ALT had studs.
Well I got 2 wires crossed, once fixed the belt started to squeal.
Also the Ebrake did not hold to good so I bought one of them adjustable cable shortners and it did not make it short enough as it ran out of adjustment.
So the 4th I tighten the ALT belt, no more squealing.
Moved on to the Ebrake, I tried to run a die lower on the shortner and the cheap part would not thread right so I cut a short piece of tubing to use as a spacer.
That part went good, installed and took it up as tight as it would go and the brake still dose not hold so need to look into it more.
Then moved the truck outside to do the part I have been putting off for a long time, sanding the filler off the hood.
I need to add another skim coat over some parts that are still a little low.

Took a picture when it was out side.

Maybe I will get out there tomorrow to finish the hood and finish stripping the tail gate.
