I've been feeling a "slight" mis at idle, and at higher highway speeds for a couple months in the 01 super crew, that 5.4 just hasn't been It's self. It's not been terrible, just one that kinda comes and goes. Well 2 weeks ago I went to pickup my parents camper, I guess the 2 hour ride back at 75 in drive turning 2500 finished it off.
Last week it finally had a p0304 and p0300 pending, tossed a plug in #4 since I didn't have alot of spare time. Ran good for a couple days, but still a slight miss fire. Then a p0301 and p0300 hit the pending file again. So I tossed a plug in #1 but noticed the coil wire was a little rough. Still had a slight random mis, and a p0300 came back. So I decided to pickup a set of coils and plugs (waiting on 4 more plugs to come it).
Popped number 2 coil off and find this. I'm guessing that was my random. I'll get the other 4 plugs, and then do bank 2 plugs/coils So I can get those crappy accels off that the previous owner put on.
Well yesterday afternoon I pulled the 9" third member apart and got it regeared. The middle pinion bearing fell apart when I pulled it apart, luckily a 9" has 3.
I got it bolted in and axles back in yesterday. This morning I put the tires and all back on and off the Jack stands. I then unbolted the the 300 mounts, and got the 351w engine mounts bolted in before it started raining.
I'm about ready to start bolting a engine in the truck, maybe next weekend if weather isn't to bad.
You were busy and got a lot done.
Bet you cant wait to see how she will run.
I was lazy, had 2 days off from work plus the weekend days and did not even go into the garage.
I have body work to do and hate doing it. It was also too damn hot / humid.
I know summer is not even here yet!

Over the weekend I cleaned up the carburetor on the little John Deere, the new seat didn't want to screw in quite all the way, which threw the float adjustment off. Ground down a large impact driver bit and ran the seat in where it should be, still had to mess around with the float sticking and dismantled the carb 3 or 4 times before it started sealing correctly and the float quit hanging up. Once that worked correctly, went to start it and the starter wouldn't do anything. Took it out, had a bare wire that was shorting on a brush holder, taped that up good, put it in, still wouldn't do anything, then found it had a bad battery cable, bypassed that with some jumper cables, had it running last night. Started instantly once it got power to the starter. Neat learning about the old carburetor and how stuff works. Pretty sure the starter for the little tractor isn't much smaller than the one on the 7.3.
That Deer have 21.5:1 compression like the IDI......
No, I think it was the mindset, overbuild it. 14 hp engine that weighs 300 lbs in a tractor that weighs 2200 lbs, each rear wheel center weighs 150 lbs.
Been trying to figure out what's been changed on the John deere's starter since the mechanical starter switch won't fit. Apparently the original stud was changed to a longer one. Ordered a correct one, gonna see if the starter shop can solder it in. Changed the oil and it made a substantial difference in oil pressure. Its amazing to me how little gas it uses, cut the gas off at the tank and it'll run for 10-15 mins with just the fuel in the fuel line. Trying to get everything mechanical working correctly before I start on the aesthetics. Went to start it today, bumped the starter, didn't choke it or give it throttle, instantly started putt putting along.
I was sure I was the only one crazy enough to try and unearth 40+ years of agricultural innovative expedient repairs.
My Farmall 504 needs the bushes in the charging system replaced, Have the parts but lacking the time.

I spent the weekend working on stuff, fixed the hood hinge on our old Toro groundmaster, repaired two window motors in dads 94 explorer, changed the oil in the tractor, and some other stuff. Then last night I go to start my truck and a tooth on my ignition actuator decides to strip/break. When I go to start it, it jams or jumps a tooth. I believe I have a good one in the parts truck. Ordered a nos manifold for the tractor to replace the rotted one.
You could feel it in the key when turned?
Was it that long sob that runs down the steering column?
The horshoe shaped piece was replaced a few years ago, this piece has teeth and hooks the piece you are talking about. Meshes with the little bronze gear, when it got to the point where it pushes the starter switch to start it, it would either jam or slip against the bronze gear.
