There is proably a more logica reason than whim. The compounds of the pads have to be compatible with the designed braking effort on the front and rear. They are often different compounds on each end of the vehicle to avoid rear wheel lockup, which plagued a lot of car makers in previous years. I've seen this happen at low and high speeds and it is not pretty, especially with average drivers.
Anyway, if the new compound for the front is not compatible with the needs of the existing rear pads, then by federal standards, Ford must replace both front and rear. This is even more critical with ABS and brake actuated skid control systems where the computer is braking and releasing for mere microseconds.
The new brake pads are not that bad. They are very pricey..It comes in a package of front and rear. If you go complain of squeeking or pulsation they will change them free depending on your mileage(if your still in warranty). There are no other pads that you can get from ford for these trucks. So if its warranty they have to replace them with these kits. There are a few dealers that are doing them on warranty for dust. So keep trying different dealers....
I've complained to my dealer about excessive squeaking...I used the lines of "I sound like a garbage truck" and "they squeak more than a herd of mice". My service advisor has told me that the pads have just come off of backorder, so he's supposed to call me when they come in, as I'm not the only customer to complain about squeaky brakes.
I'll post wether or not they cover it under warranty.
We had the new pads put on a few weeks ago and can still see the rims. What a major improvement! We had to set up an appointment with the regional service engineer for an evaluation. Once he drove and inspected the brakes he immediatly cleared the dealer to order a rear-chunk, half-shafts, drive shaft, and break pads. (We are now on axle assembally #3) It was stated that all four pads needed to be replaced for liability reasons. Interesting note; when we took our exp in for the work, there were 4 other expeditions having the same parts replaced.
So far so good, no clatter on turns, no clunk when driving 40 and slightly depress gas pedal, and no need to wash the SUV.
Ford may have some quality issues, but, at least they don't give the consumer the brush off like General Motors. I had a 2000 Chevy Tahoe and after GM would not stand behind their product and down right insulted my wife, No one in my family will ever own another new GM product ever again. That is alot of lost sales.
Yeah, I would like to have Drew Ford in San Diego replace my pads, but all they say is that it's not a warranty item, and they won't do it. I don't want to press the issue with out something else that I can use to justify my complaint. They just roll their eyes when I mention this forum.

I get the same response from Perry Ford at the Mile of Cars. I think in areas like ours it's not advantagous for them to please the customer. THey have hundreds/thousands other people that will buy their cars and use their service.
As it ends up my dealer gave me a written cost of the new pads of $115. They now are not honoring this...but will be made to by the Maryland Attorney Generals office...since they breached a contract with me.
The dealers excuse was "we quoted you a price on the only part number we had available to us at that time. We did not have a price on the new kit, then." So they quoted me the price of the old kit...well tough luck...now they have to sell them to me at that price.

OK guys, got my new third party front break pads installed. Also put back on my 20" tires and chrome rims. Will let all know how the dust is. When I had my 03 (I am the one that got my 03 replaced by lemon law with an 04 just for reference) and had these beautiful chrome rims on, I did not seem to notice that much brake dust.
Wonder if it is because the rims have spokes kinda like with gaps in between. I am probaly not explaining it right, but I did not notice the dust as bad on the 03 as I have with the stock rims on my new 04.
Was going thru the winter with the stock rims on the new 04, but missed the beauty of the chrome rims and the look of a 20" tire and it is now in the 60's here in ole Nevada so had them put back on when my son changed the front brake pads.
Hope I can offer some proof that the 3rd party pads are in fact minus brake dust. My son said they were a mess to change, dust all over the old pads.
hi folks got the kleen wheels installed yesterday so far so good no brake dust whatsoever normally about this time one more day and would be getting ready to clean the wheels and tires so far looking great, perfectly clean!!!!!!!
