THE AUDI / VW DIESEL IS A GREAT ENGINE DEVELOPED FOR GT RACING, LE MANS, ETC. TOO MANY CYLINDERS FOR A TRUCK AND TORQUE CURVE IS DESIGNED FOR HIGH RPM. A GREAT ENGINE FOR ITS DESIGNED USE, RACING, HIGH RPM IN A CAR THAT WEIGHTS 2000 LBS?
This answer is un-researched and completely wrong.
The TDI V10 in the Touareg is a completely different engine than the GT/Lemans TDI. The Touareg V10 reaches it peak torque rating of 627 ft.lbs at 2000 rpm. Its peak HP rating of 345HP at 3500 rpm.
Since when is there EVER too many cylinders in any vehicle? All this promotes is a smoother running engine with more power-strokes to take advantage of throughout the crankshaft's rotation. Not to mention, if the engine is more efficient with more cylinders, why not have them?
Lets compare this engine with the currently available 6.4L PSD.
HP
PSD= 350HP @3000 rpm
V10 TDI= 345HP @ 3500 rpm
Winner= PSD. BARELY.
HP/L
HP/L= TDI, by quite a bit
(TDI 5.0 V10= 69HP per liter, PSD 6.4 V8= 54.7/L)
Torque rating
PSD= 650ft.lbs
TDI= 627ft.lbs
Winner=PSD, by 23 ft.lbs.
Fuel mileage
Here there are some things to take into account. One being weight.
PSD crew cab 4x4 =6,595
Touareg= 5,924
Advantage= Touareg
Actual combined MPG
VW= 19.5
PSD=????? There are so many different answers that it's impossible to weed through so I'll take my co-workers example into account. He gets 11.2 mpg combined on a F-250 CC SRW 4x4 towing nothing.
Winner= VW... Put 600 lbs in the back of a Touareg and I doubt the mpg would change much.
Honestly, there isn't much of a comparison since the vehicles aren't in the same class. Had VW made a 3/4-1 ton truck with this V10 TDI then there would be quite the battle to be had. I have no doubt that VW would win a diesel comparison in most any Diesel comparison.
PSD CREW CAB 4X4 6,595 LBS? WHAT DID I MISS HERE? MY 2006 LONG BED CREW CAB KING RANCH FX4 WITH A FULL TANK OF FUEL WEIGHTS OUT ON SCALES AT 8500 LBS AND NO THE BED WAS EMPTY. THANKS FOR THE VEHICLE WEIGHT INFO EVEN THOUGH INCORRECT.

Even my CC 4x4 tips in at over 7,000lbs, and PSD's weigh a good 400lbs more than the V10's.
But yeah, it could be dry weight.
In anycase, the weight only affects the mpg, which is going to be way off anyay comparing a mid-sized SUV to a full size pickup.

Lets compare this engine with the currently available 6.7L PSD.

Granted it's still a new engine, but the job #1's are getting far better mpg than the 6.4's, more like 16 or so stock.
Winner= VW... Put 600 lbs in the back of a Touareg and I doubt the mpg would change much. Do you think 600 lbs is going to affect a super duty? These things tow 20 times that without a sweat, even my gasser can do it.

There, fixed it for you. Remember the 6.4 isn't currently be produced, it's the 6.7, although I used the job #2 numbers, but whatever.
