I would say with absolute confidence that the average 7.3 diesel engine will last longer than a same generation V10. In my immediate area, I know of a guy with over 500,000 on his 7.3 and several over 300,000 and these trucks work for a living.
Not so turd burger, it's because it is a lighter engine and doesn not have any problems. Just check the difference in TSB's between the V-10 and ALL of the Ford diesels. Other than the spark plug issue in the first 2-3 years, compaired to the hundreds of TSB's for the diesel dogs. That's why there is more V-10's in RV's than any other engine made. It is what it is, Dude, so face the real facts.
The only problem I have with the gearing debate is that the gearing doesn't "just get it in the power band faster." It does help get it in its power band faster, but it also helps it put more torque to the ground. To save you the math equations, a v10 with a 4.10 in 1st gear (manual) at 3750 rpm is putting 6,318 torque to the ground. A v10 with a 3.55 (not made, I know) in 1st gear at 3750 rpm is putting 5,466 torque to the ground. That is a huge difference, from nothing but gearing alone. If gearing makes that big of a difference on the exact same engine, then how much of the difference between a v10 with a 4.30 and a psd with a 3.55 do you think comes from the gearing and how much from the engine? A v10 with a 4.10 will smoke a v10 with a 3.55 any way you want to compare them, and it's not just because it gets in the power band faster.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The old 7.3 f-superduty came with 4.63's and 5.13's if I remember correctly (I may be off a number or two, but still close). Top speed was only about 85 mph, but they would pull anything you wanted to hook to them.

Well, that may or may not be true. I know of a number of V-10's that are heading for their 300k mark, not to mention a new V-10 engine costs about 1/3 what a rebuilt 7.3, not to mention that a new V-10 will eat a 7.3's lunch, towing or whatever. Been there done that. Pretty even with a 6 leaker and can only be beat towing by a 6.4....only if you don't have to lift a cab.
Yup, gotta go haul some serious weight, gotta get my big V10 out. Yeah right, keep dreaming. I'd 10 times rather have something that lasts and has some pulling power than something that costs a little less. If your pulling something for a living, not playing around in your RV, its almost always gonna be a diesel.
You bet we cling to the 7.3, we know a good deal when we see one.
i don't understand the smoke thing, f.ing pointless! i get it, you like to waste fuel.
I do have to laugh at this one though..... A 460 guy saying it's pointless to waste fuel. A psd could roll smoke halfway across the country and still waste less fuel than someone babying a 460 on the same trip. I could poke a hole in my gas tank and still waste less fuel than a 460

I know of a V10 not far from me with over 1 MILLION miles without ever having the valve covers removed. And this is not the 5.4 in Ohio, this one is in IL.
Wow pappy is an angry thing. The V10 doesn't have problems. Right. All motors have problems. The V10 had issues with stripping spark plug threads (that may or may not have ejected said plugs). I feel the majority of the 6.0's with head gasket issues were due to owners that added tuners to their rigs. I know that some people got motors that constantly had problems but you get those in all makes and models same as you get the ones that last for hundreds of thousands of miles.
248 pages of comparing who's got a bigger johnson... let it go fellas hahah. We all chose a motor based on our own needs, and our own personal preferences. No matter what we all have one thing in common... it's a FORD!
Yeah, a 460 is very fuel efficient haven't you heard. Just another point to take a diesel over gas- Fuel Mileage. Hey, 460 & V10 guys I got a question. How many gas stations do you guys own just to put your almighty gasser down the road?
