How can you run a gear lower than me? You have a lower rear gear already. We will probably be in the same gear at 2500 rpm. You will only have so much power even after the math because you have less torque. Once you shift to the next gear guess what, you have lost that HP advantage and you are working to get back up to again.
I said I would show my math on how the V10 is cheaper than a 7.3 PSD and is more profitable as my work truck.
I finely got the time to type it all out, here it is.
This is all based on the miles I have put on mine and my maintenance schedule.
All the prices are from O'reillys.
The 7.3 was $6,000 more than a V10 new.
V10 164,000 miles at 10mpg at $2.40 = $39,360
7.3 164,000 miles at 14mpg at $2.60 = $30,457.
That puts the 7.3 $2903 ahead.
57 oil changes using castrol synthetic blend and wix filters.
V10 6 quarts at $5 = $30 + filter at $6 = $36. 57 x $36 = $ 2,052
7.3 15 quarts at $5 = $75 + filter at $22= $97. 57 X $97 = $ 5,529
That puts the V10 $574 ahead.
9 air filters
V10 $19 x 9 = $171
7.3 $26 x 9 = $234
That puts the V10 $637 ahead.
fuel filters
V10 $13 x 9 = $117
7.3 $41 x 9 = $369
V10 $889 ahead
belts X 2
V10 $29 x 2 = $58
7.3 $36 x 2 = $72
v10 $903
hoses x 2
V10 upper $18
lower $70
heater$39
heater$17 = $144 x 2 = $288
v10 5 gal at $11 = $55 x 2 = $110
7.3 8 gal at $11 = $88 x 2 = $176
So, by my math the V10 comes out $899 ahead of the 7.3 power stroke.
More miles and more maintenance should continue to stretch that gap.
Some of your data depends on your geographical location. Diesel in my area is 10-20 cents per gallon less than the cheapest gas.
I assume that you are figuring the milage as towing milage? Most diesels get 18MPG or better while the best your V-10 will see is 12 or 13 and that is not at 85 - 90 MPH.
We do not use synthetic oil in our trucks. We us either Delo 400, Rotella or some use Royal Purple (which is very expensive). I buy Delo 400 by the gallon for 16.00 per gallon. It is still more expensive to change my oil than yours but it is less than your figures. The filters are 19.00 Motocraft FL1995 filters, NOT WIX.
Where is your tune up at IE: Spark Plugs?
I think when you recalculate you will find the diesel is cheaper. Expecially in my area. Northern California. PS, Diesel is cheaper in the central valley by about a dime and gas is more.
I thought it was a 6k option, that kind of messes up all my math.
Your oil not get filthy by 5K?
Sure it is dirty, but not to the point of needing changing. I was told by a ford heavy duty truck dealer I could get 10k out of a change if I was putting the miles on quickly (which I was putting on around 3k/week). They said they would stand by any warranty issues so I ran it that way. Worked great, never had any issues. Now that I don't put miles on so quick I back it off to 7-8k.

My v10 has seen 15.8MPG.
towing at 85-90 I get a little over 8.
10 is the average.
14 is about what I think I would be getting with my driving in a 7.3.
I know that my prices my not be right, but that is what they are here.
Is something wrong with the wix filters for a PSD?

I guess it matters what you call dirty.
Tell you what, I will take a pic of mine at the next change so you can see when I think it should be changed, you do the same.

forgot spark plugs, what about glow plugs?
The price I quoted is Ford's price in 2002. Shouldn't matter what state you are in.
Glow plugs are not a regular maint. issue. You change out as needed. In almost 200k on my pickup I haven't needed any yet (knock on wood), but they are not expensive.
I want it for my wife. Maybe we could get them to fight for it. I will dig a mud pit.
My wife is currently driving a GMC conversion van. I want to get an Excursion though. It has to be the 7.3. I will keep looking since I cannot have yours.lol

To me it is a matter of the additives in the oil, not just how dirty it is. The only way to tell for sure is to have it analyzed. I have never done it, but with a psd you can tell for sure when you let it go too far. Your injectors sound wierd!
ok, well that makes the math harder.
V10 4R100 3.73 vs 7.3 ZF 5 4.10
Remember, everyone here has been assuming 3.73 in the PSD and 4.30 in the V-10. That has been the discussion all along. When someone mentioned 4.10 for the diesel it was said it is not standard but instead an option.
