It depends on what flash they give you.

If it's brand new, the tuner will load and and prompt you to call superchips.
Superchips will then update the tuner for your new stock files.....that's the beauty of computer code specific programming. You can get a new flash to cure a stock issue, but still have superchips tuning.
When you buy a tuner, any needed updates are free!

To answer your question TT,
Yes, if an update is needed you will have to send it back.

Mileage Test Results stock v ECON

Here are the results of a mileage test between STOCK and the SCMT tuner in ECON mode. My tuner has the changes to the tranny files for rough shifting under light throttle.

Truck: Extended cab, long wheel base, 4X4, auto, bed cap, 100% stock otherwise. Ended ECON trial with 8400 miles, ended STOCK trial with 9200 miles. No towing. Running unloaded commuting to/from work.

Conditions: 50% interstate at 70-75MPH, 25% rural at 40-55MPH, 25% suburban streets. Few lights. No traffic. Conditions were as close to identical as one can achieve in a real world test. Even the weather was consistent. During both trials I drove conservatively. I did not challenge anyone!

Trials were conducted back-to-back: tuned first (607 miles), then stock (605 miles). After any tuning change, I drove 200 miles before measuring mileage to give the adaptive systems some time to adjust.

16.75MPG in ECON mode.
16.50MPG in STOCK mode.

0.25MPG better in ECON mode. Not at all what I’d hoped. Here’s why: I expected a larger MPG gain, especially considering how careful I drove. Also the stock tranny shifts like butter, but when tuned the tranny starts out OK and then over time gets very rough again.

These are just my observations. Please don’t flame me or these results. This is not an attack on the maker or users that enjoy better performance than I have achieved.

To get 16.5 stock is good. Some trucks are getting 13 or 14.
Some will get 18 with tuning, but it all depends on the truck, driver, conditions, fuel quality, ambient temp, average oil temp, etc...
There are SO many variables.

If you would, can you continue to track your mileage and post results?

Thanks for the input.

Vic, My SCMT in hi-performance mode shifts very hard under very light exceleration.......when i first tune it to the hi-performance setting it shift pretty good but then after a short period of driving the shifting gets harder and harder........is there anyway to get my SCMT to shift like it does in tow save mode in hi-performance mode. Can I send my tuner to Superchips and have them fix it, if so to your attention?

I noticed the exact same thing out of mine...No matter how slow I take off with the tuner the thing really jerks through the gears... Im hoping the econ tune will lighten it up...

Vic,

Am I able to buy the SC1704 with the 5.01 version right away or do I have to buy the tuner then send it back to you?

Also if I was one of the people that needed the new version because of the shifting problems, now that I have a current flash will I still need the new version?

No.

If you have an issue, as always, you can send it in but you should have no issues.

If it's that noticeable, I can make a change.

If you would like an RA, call superchips and it will get into my hands.

Sounds cool vic...I may do that...But Im going to iinstall the econ tune this weekend and see how it does....I dont mind/actually like the hard shifts with the performance tune...But if its harsh all the time it will get annoying for sure... Im going to try everything out first before making the decision to send it back...

Im having a hard tiime convincing myself to flash it with anything other than the performance tune...

Love it so far..

My Tuner!

Vic ,
I would really appreciate your help with my tuner that I sent to you guys on the 4th for an update. I have called last week and this week and both times I am told it would be sent out the next day and I still Have not recieved it. I was told the first time they were waiting on firmware update and today a week later I was told they were waiting on a engineer?? Your help in getting my updated tuner back would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your response .

Thanks in advance,
