(course i do have 1500 lbs or so more than you in the Ex... )

Curious - did you have the EGR connected or not ?
It was connected.

I had it disconnected for a couple of days prior just to see if I could tell any difference - slight if any on my truck - and was just living with the check engine light being on.

After doing a couple of practice starts this morning, I decided to reconnect it to see if that made any difference. Again, I couldn't tell any change, better or worse after reconnecting it. So I decided to leave it connected for the runs at the track.

1704 stuff

When I use tow mode with the 1704 I get madd surges when accelerating. Mostly from 30+ in second+ gear. Economy and Hi Performance work just fine, but towing just does not cut it. Tried 2 differnent tuners too. Shifts pretty rough in all modes after some time too. That might just be the nature of the beast though.

Anyway any thoughts on this would be helpful.

Thanks

I towed a 10000 lb trailer up and down some 8% grades just fine in tow safe mode on my truck, an 02/03 build with the Dec '03 flash. Pulled like a champ on the level as well. No surging.

Shifts are firm in the Econo and Hi Perf modes, but not what I would call harsh. Shift points on light throttle could perhaps be a tad lower, but most of the time don't bother me.

Hopefull Vic will have some good input.

Can you tell a big differance in the safe mode towing compared to
stock? I am considering a SC 1704 tuner, I just want to make
sure this is what I really want. I have an 05/03 build date with
the Oct flash.

Definitely,

The truck revs a bit higher before shifting and pulls stronger both loaded and empty. The higher revving before shifting when pulling up some steep hills seems to do a better job of maintaining or increasing speed while keeping EGT low.

The max preturbo EGT that I saw while towing my trailer a few weeks back was 1233 deg F. before backing out of the throttle for a second and then putting the foot back down. This was in one the first couple gears while pulling back out from a turnout and at full throttle.

Generally the high EGTs were in the low 1100s, and typically less than that while pulling up some steep grades. I had my alarm set to 1150 and it only went off once or twice.

I never had that much of a problem with the power in stock trim, and while the driveability seems better with the SCMT, the big thing is that fuel economy seemed better. This was the first time that I had pulled that route so I didn't have data for a direct comparison, but have pulled a lot of similar terrain before and the mileage was improved over that. See one of my earlier posts.

I take it then you are really happy with the tuner, and no problems.
I use my truck for a daily driver, and for recreational towing, UVW
is 7160 lbs for my TT. I have not had any issues with my truck except
for the Oct flash.

Yes, quite happy.

I would like to also get to a dyno day in addition to the recent trip to the track just so that I can post some results so that we can compare the SCMT with the Predator.

Thanks for your response. I will probably be ordering one soon. We are
planning a trip to the coast in Sept., and I would like to have it by then.
Thanks again.

Well I called Superchips today, after getting with a good friend at a local FORD dealership to make sure I have the most up to date flash (the same one my other buddy with the other 1704 has).
The guy asks me "What is the build date of your truck?" I tell him it is June of 04. He tells me ”I guess you could send it back and we can take a look at it" "It may be that the flash is to new." ??????? He did not ask me any questions about the code it gave or about the 2 file names it gave me. So let me get this strait I can spend $400, then pay to have it mailed back to you, and wait to find out what the heck is going on? Like I told him, "Or maybe I can just return it and find ANOTHER tuner. This is a competitive market. <O</O
You know he did not say anything wrong but just did not seem to care one way or the other that I just spent $400 on their product and it does not work!<O</O

I'm thinking you got to be kidding me. It gave me a code E6d and 2 file numbers.

So we take the tune out of my buddies truck which is an 04 4X4 CC dually, 03 build motor that just got an updated flash this week, and try his tuner thinking it may be a problem with my tuner, Nope. Same error message. His works like a charm and mine will not load. I have a 04 2X4 CC dually 6/04 build date, 16/6/04 engine date. This sucks, so now I got to stare at this thing all week end.</FONT>

What the heck is wrong! Man I am so disappointed right now.

We were all heading to the local hangout and I had a new toy.

I guess not.………........<O></O>

Vic, I install Hi-Performance mode today. I could not tell any difference from econmy are they about the same or should I notice a difference. I towed TT this weekend in tow safe, it performed very well. Shifts where smooth, power was good. MPG was 10.1 towing in mountians of NC. By the way installs are very easy and not time consuming at all.

Not everyone can be on the forums all day and all night! Vic stops by here in his spare time, not in an official capacity for Superchips and only stops by every couple of days or so.

Frankly, I don't think your tuner dealer did anything wrong. It was a situation entirely out of his control. The reason is dealers cannot update the units, only Superchips can. The dealers can't just send them to Superchips and say "update it for my customer's truck." First, the unit has to be plugged into the truck and it reads out the computer's program into itself. If it doesn't know how to work with that program (with newest flashes that can happen) you send your unit to Superchips. Superchips needs that "code read" in the unit you sent them in order to update it correct. If Superchips didn't care they wouldn't provide updates.... but they do care and do provide updates. The unfortunate thing is that at this point they don't have the means to update it over the Internet.

No problem, I asked for his opinion now 4 days ago but did not realise he did not stop in that much.
Also I am not talking to my dealer, I have been talking to Superchips directly. And let me tell you if I had not read GREAT things about the way he has helped in the past this thing would already be back in the "dealers" hands.
