Vic,
Because of your patience with all of the questions and the good reviews posted on this forum I ordered a 1704 0n Wednesday night.
It came in this morning and I quickly installed the performance tune.
Needless to say the power is awsome - what surprised me was firm but smooth shifts at lower RPM. The unit is so drivable I'm hesitant to retune to econo mode.
Could I be so lucky to see fuel economy improvement in performance mode ?? ( driving moderatly of course)
Great Job Vic!!
2004 SDSC4X4 (April Build)
I just purchased the 1704. I have a build date of 11/03 so I know the tuner will work. I run 37" tires with 4.56 gears in the back. I do not tow that often, but when I do it is a load less than 4000lbs. I have plans for gauges in the future, but do not have enough hours in the day to do it as of yet. I have not installed the tuner......yet. I do occasional highway driving with mostly city street driving. In your opinion, what is the best setting to run on , to remain safe until I get gauges. I do not drive like a "kid" but I do admit I like to enter freeway on ramps as they should be entered.......FAST. With the occasional throtle stomp to avoid a (SNIP) in the way. I have learned alot in the last 4 hours of reading and feel the Superchips is worth keeping!!!!!

Joe family site no words like this.
Thanks buddy, less keep it clean.
OOOOPS! Sorry. Any takers on the question I posted?
No worry you know now...as for the question...well Saturday AM is sometims a bit slow around here, guys doing the chores and all...Sunday can be the same.

I Run my 1704 in Economy mode most of the time (03/03 build CC FX4 Auto) and I see around 18.5 highway mpg with PLENTY of power. Even in economy tune the 6.0 pulls really hard all the way to the rev limiter. Driveability is awesome. I can't get a good estimate of mpg in performance mode because I love to se the mixture of black diesel smoke mixed with white tire smoke!
I am considering the purchase of a F 250 4x4 crewcab when the 2005's come out. Been pretty much of a Chevy dude but I am leaning towards this pickup. I want the PSD. This is an interesting thread. This will be my first post.
I have a question. Why does Super Chip reccomend the economy setting for towing. I have noticed that other tuner companies also reccomend the "lower" settings for towing. Is HP increased but torque lost?? I would think that you would want more performance for towing. I have a 5000 pound boat and a 30' toybox trailer that weighs about 10,000 or more that I pull around.
Also, sorry if this has been asked and answered, but no way to reprogram for taller tires?? Also how long b4 the chip available for '05 models?
Ok one more. Tell me why Superchips is a better product than the Edge Programmers product that gives you the option to change the power level on the fly.
Edge doesn't make a programmer for the 6.0. They make a fueling box. It basically increases fueling external to the computer box. It has 3 areas it doesn't stack up:
a. No fine level of control over the computer.
b. No programming of the transmission characteristics.
c. No diagnostic code reader/clearer.
No, the Microtuner for diesels will not let you reprogram for taller tires. You won't see any chips available for the 05. The 6.0 diesel's computer can't be chipped because it does not have a service port for a chip. You can add external fueling boxes (like the Edge) or program the computer's flash memory (like the Diablo Sport Predator or Superchips Microtuner).
thanks Ken. Now why do they reccomend towing at the lower power settings?
More power = more fuel injected and higher timing advance. This combination produces more heat. When the exhaust gas temperature exceeds around 1250 degrees f for more than a few seconds the turbine vanes in the turbo will melt. Another reason for using the towing mode with the tuners is they use different transmission tables to provide proper shifting under load.
BTW you might also have problems pulling the tongue out of your trailer with the Superchips or Predator tuners in performance mode! Kidding of course. They both make unbelievable power!
i tow using hi performance on the superchips with a 4inch cat back exhaust. They told me running that kind of exhaust it would be fine on level 3.
You need to be very careful what you mean by "towing".
The performance file is meant for up to 6,000 LBS only.
I don't care what you have for exhaust, etc....
If you tow more than 6,000 LBS on the Performance file it is not supported in terms of warranty and I really hope you have an EGT gauge and are watching it like a hawk. How much weight are we talking here?
The trailer spec is 6400 lbs dry but loaded it is typically in the 10000 lbs range. Combined truck and trailer weight the one time I weighed it was 18000 lbs.
I have not had even a hint of a high EGT with the ECON mode while towing, but I still hope you have gauges so you can monitor EGT.
I towed that load in the Tow Safe mode. Yes, I do have gauges.
I had thought about trying the Econo mode while towing this load just to see what kind of EGTs I might see, but there's plenty of power in the tow safe mode and I probably won't bother with the Econo mode.

Do remember, if you "experiment" towing more than the recommended amount with the ECON or PERF files, you are on your own! The tow limits are definitely there for a reason.
