Only the dealer can, superlift tru speed and gear swap. .
Gear swaps have no effect on the speedometer.
The speedo runs off a tone ring that is bolted on along with the ring gear. For any given speed the ring gear will be running the same rpm no matter what gear you have.
Jim, SO would my best option be to get the SCMT over the SCT for the loads I will be carrying. Right now im at 3.73 gear ratio but am going to do a gear swap to a 4.56 or maybe a 4.30 since im on 35"s and will be hauling 15k. Hauling that trailer wont be very often. The only thing is I dont know which will yeild best safest power since the only power mods are tuner and exhaust and saftey gauges. Plus i realize i would have to have someone custom tune it(SCT) and im weary of that.

Even as a huge proponent of SCT, for everday driving and that kind of load, I'd stick with the 1704. The majority of SCT tuners (likewise myself, I'm guilty too) have the tendency to load the tune slightly hotter on average, even for tow and economy files. The SCT tuning arose from a purpose much more based on sport than the 1704, and altogether you are probably safer with the 1704 when loaded heavily.
If you have the dealer change your tire size, then install the 1704-a, the 1704-a will retain the changes the dealer made to your gear/tire calibration. =o)
By the way, 05 and 06 have a different piston design (lower compression), so the gains aren't as large. The 1704-a vs 1704 simply indicates that it contains 2005 calibrations. The 1704 supports only through MODEL YEAR 2004
I want to add an exception to what Vic just said ... there are SOME 2005's out there that the 1704 will work on. I know this because I have one, and Vic was the one who advised me that it would work. The exceptions are very early '05's, because essentially they are 04's in disguise. I bought my '05 at the end of '04, but the build date on the truck was August/'04. At that time, Vic advised me that my truck still had the '04 spec equipment under the shiny new '05 sheetmetal, and that it would be ok to order and use a 1704 (which I did). If you have an early build '05, chances are you really have an '04 in disguise, like me...

Steve

However, if someone has a model year 05 truck and buys a 1704 for it and it doesnt work...its the "too bad, so sad" theory in which they will tell you you used the wrong part number.
You will then either have to return it to the place of purchase and exchange for a 1704-a or pay superchips $200 to update your 1704 into a 1704-a.
The best way is not to circumvent the system.
Their policy clearly states that warranty and support applies only to vehicles that have the correct part number tuner.
Steve, you have an excursion, no?
This is why you were a rare exception.
Most 05 excursions have 04 calibrations, so either tuner will work.
1704 fits 03-04
1704a fits 03-05
1706 fits 06 only
The above information is all that is necessary to select the correct tuner.
1704 is essentially an obsolete part number, superseded by the 1704-a
If you have and 03 or 04 truck, there it NO DIFFERENCE which tuner you buy.
No difference at all.
05 must have a 1704-a and 06 must have a 1706
03 and 04 trucks can use either 1704 or 1704-a, but not 1706
This should clear up any confusion.

Thanks for the clarification, Vic! Your original post made it sound as if the 1704-A was only for '05's and above, so I thought that people in my situation might wind up having a problem if they went with the -A... Now it is crystal clear.
...and yes, I have an '05 Excursion ... as many of you know, the '05's were mostly carry-over from '04 -- they didn't get the new Superduty truck front suspensions, the new dash, etc. I really would have liked that new front suspension, mostly because of the tighter turning radius!

Steve

You best bet would be to go with SCT for a custom program to work with the EDGE.
Correct.
SCMT should not be stacked.
SCT can make you a transmission tune with minimal engne tuning (to allow the edge to do it's thing without running too much injector timing, too much fuel etc...
im still interested. i tried calling superchips to find out what the cost to reprogram is but they put me on hold and got disconnected twice. im gonna try again tomorrow.
