Overkill2s truck thread...
When I drive home, I can see the hills and windmills in Wyoming county from top of the hill that I'm on going home. Nice country.
When I did my first drain and fill at 31k miles, I decided to drop the pan to replace the filter. The "O" shaped magnet around the drain plug had a lot of break-in material on it then. I also added two high temp rare earth magnets to the bottom of the pan at that time of filter replacement/pan cleaning. So it's been 60k miles since I last opened up the trans. I took the truck for a ride to get the trans and transfer case fluid warm before I did this. I told the forum here that at this 90k mile drain and fill, I would take samples of each (the transmission and the transfer case) to send off to Blackstone for analysis to see how well this 30k mile drain and fill keeps the fluid. I am also sending in a new, virgin sample of the Mercon LV to see how the fluid samples compare to the new fluid. Is it overkill? Maybe. But I don't mind changing the fluid early to keep the trans and the transfer case in good shape.
Here's the pics:
The new trans filter that went in. I bought two of them from dieselfiltersonline.com. The next filter will go in at about 150k miles for another filter change interval of 60k.
The two rare earth magnets I placed into the bottom at 31k miles. I scrapped of the top of one prior to this pic.
Cleaned off more to show the magnet.
The cleaned version. These are some strong little magnets. Could not get all the stuff off....
Cleaned and ready to go back on...
The transfer case fluid looked better (redder) than the trans fluid. Stay tuned because when I get the results back, I'll post up here.
The second drain and fill for the trans was at 67147 miles.
This current drain and fill was at 91647 miles with filter change.
The transfer case was drained and refilled all three times. I'm curious to see what these analysis's yield. The trans fluid definitely looked darker than the transfer case fluid. I've read that the color doesn't mean anything as it turns darker red at one point (and has no effect on oil effectiveness) but with that said, I've seen videos of longer drain intervals and that fluid looked hardly red at all. It didn't look good at all. So I don't buy into the longer change or rather drain and fill cycles that people seem to think is okay.
I think this will be informative for the masses to see if the 30k mile drain and fill cycle is good at maintaining the LV's additives.
You sending in a trans fluid sample yourself?

I still have the factory fluid in my transmission at just over 70k. I was wanting to drop it at 60k but life got in the way and haven't had the time. When I get it changed I will take a sample and send it off to Blackstone so we can compare notes.

EDIT
This is how I made my 96 E4OD trans, IMO, last through some heavy commercial plowing in Buffalo.

My 05 Super Duty and my 98 F150 I changed the transmission oil every 30k miles like Ford recommended. At a combined 560,000 miles for these 3 vehicles, I haven't had any problems with any transmissions. Having said that I firmly believe this 6 speed transmission is a much better transmission than the 05 and 04 transmissions.

Anyways, just came across this while looking at something for a reply I will posting to a new user here.

I wonder if an aftermarket extra capacity trans pan is my future now? I am overkill BTW.
