Wiring is all done, I am now trying to find a location for the GPS antenna and the wifi antenna. Does it matter how close they are? I remember reading on the form somewhere that the best place is to mount them on top of the air ducts right behind the radio. I might just put one to the right of the radio and one to the left of the radio on top of that air duct.
I went ahead and hooked up the dimmer wire as well.
That is where I put my antennas. They work well under the thin dashboard plastic.
Great!
Quick question for you, I'm hooking up my permanent USB OBD2 and I realize, aside from the two USB ports that have cable on them that hooks into a connector on the back of the radio, there's also a USB port on the back of the radio. Would it be okay if I used the USB port that's on the back of the radio instead of using up one of my extendable USB ports? For my OBD dongle that is.
Yes, it should be fine. Although, before you put the dash bezel on and tighten the mounting screws, turn the truck on and make sure by running FSL just as a test.
Install is done for now. In the process of taking my old radio out I bent the end of my backup camera wire and my backup camera does not work anymore. New AV cable will fix that. Also, I didn't know it before but after taking the dash bezel off, I found the in between part, the little divider between the radio and the AC controls is cracked in multiple places. I will have to live with it for now but, it will drive me nuts I'm sure and I'll just have to buy a new dash or fix that one with JB weld, sandpaper and paint matching......
Using the USB port on the back of the head unit itself worked great for forscan and now I have both of my extended USB ports free. Due to working in the dark I did not have time to figure out where I wanted them mounted yet. I'll figure that out at a later date when I have more time. They call a little while ago has bumped my schedule to loaded. My cousin wants me to put a transmission in his truck, I have three jobs to do, Grass to cut, sod to lay, all kinds of stuff. That's why I wanted to get my radio in tonight because I don't know when I'll have another free day. And I wouldn't free today but I got off at 5:00 so I was free tonight anyway. I'll post some pictures tomorrow! Very happy with the A6 gesture controls too. They work very well and it is so nice to be able to set each gesture command to do what you want it to do. I'm very happy with my new head unit!
I’ve been putting the GPS/WiFi receivers on top of dash near the center. The WiFi just lays hidden in the crack between dash and windshield and GPS gets a little piece of double sided tape with wire tucked out of sight in the gap along glass.

Gotcha. I'll keep that in mind if I ever have to go back in there which won't be long unfortunately. My backup camera wire got bent like I said my other text so, I have to pull it all back off when I get the new wire in and run my new backup camera wire. Also, I have a plan for fixing that broken part of the dash. I'll post a pic of where it's broken a little bit. I think some well-placed JB weld and some paint matching will make it look okay. I imagine the dash bezel is a little expensive so I would rather not have to buy one. I am sure I can figure out some way to either fix that divider or make a new one that can mount in the same place in some way. I will figure it out one way or another!
Man I had a rough night sleep last night. I got home around 12 to 1 o'clock last night after installing my new head unit and got to bed for a little while before I woke up with some bad welding burn on my eyes from earlier that day. This was my first really bad welding burn on my eyes and I didn't know what to do. As it turns out, eye drops make it worse. Ask me how I know.
Ive never felt so much like a baby from pain before. I've always had a really high pain tolerance but, a severe welding burn on the eyes almost knocked me down a few extra pegs. That sh** hurt. Eyes are still burning a bit now, 4-5 hours later. Hopefully my work day won't be to bad. I will pay more attention around welding from now on. My dad told me that it's not just looking at the welding that does it but also the reflection of the uv light bouncing off of things can burn your eyes too. Even with a helmet on if your in a shiny metal box it will make it to yours eyes somehow. He told me his story of that happening. Needles to say, I don't know if that hurt as bad as cutting my knee open with a chainsaw or not but, it hurt like hell anyway. I didn't miss a day of work from my knee Injury and I don't plan on missing one from my eyes burning. I got things to do! That being said, I do know that I need to take care of my body and I will be more careful from now on with the chainsaw and with welding and with anything else that I do. My young inexperienced side shows again!

Many industrial buildings with metal walls have that shiny white covering on the insulation that is super bad about reflecting the UV at everyone around.
Most welding shops have portable blinds they place around the welding site to block off the UV, but it can reflect off the ceiling as well.
I've never burned my eyes bad, just my arms and the V of my not-fully-buttoned-up shirts.
My worst experience is from burning a hole in my eardrum. Now THAT is pain I never want to experience again!

I can't imagine! I flinched when I read that last part! I hope that never happens to me!

I drilled a hole in the back of my ashtray and pulled the 2 usb cords through there. When not in use I can push them into the ashtray and close it. Although, there is pretty much always a phone plugged into one, if not both.
I'll have to look into the gestures, do all A6 have that? Or is it a new feature?

I like that idea but I think I would rather use the cup holder in my particular case. Either one would do the same thing anyway but I guess the ashtray is less used than the cup holder is but I have a center console with cup holders and I have a homemade block of wood cup holder that goes underneath the center seat. I'll post a pic of that.

No, only the A6 pro gesture model has gesture controls. I will post a link to it although I bought the last one Amazon had for now. I have to say I am impressed by how well the gesture controls actually work. I quite like it. If you want to pause it you just move your hand towards the screen in a palm formation and the music stops. If you want to turn the audio up or down you just roll the **** with your finger in front of the sensor and either direction to turn the audio up or down. There are a total of nine gesture controls that are programable to do what you want it to do. One of them can be set to home, one of them can open your navigation screen and so on so forth. There was probably 20 to 25 different options that you could set for what the gestures do. The only reason I really got the gesture one was for the extra USB port on the back. The other ones didn't come with as many USB ports I believe. But now that I have it, I am very happy that I bought this one!

I know that my S8 Ultra also has gesture controls, but as I'm still discovering how everything else works, I have yet to try it.........I might investigate further
