I figured out why the driver side exhaust manifold doesn’t have the gusset between the last two mounting flanges. The stockers don’t have gussets so I think that’s why no one caught it. Even the BD rep didn’t know why.

I checked some items off the punch list today.

Torque exhaust manifold bolts
Install manifold blankets
Install harmonic damper bolts (see photo of how I kept crank from moving)
Check torque on accessible fasteners
Tighten coolant and fuel fittings
Firewall insulation
Wrap downpipe, collector and up pipes, ceramic/silicone spray paint up pipes after wrapping

I removed the firewall heat shield and used it as a pattern for three layers of 1/4” Cool It acoustic and heat shielding and reinstalled it then tidied up the existing heat shield I had on top. I was going to stick a layer on the AC box but didn’t have enough material. A 36x72” roll was perfect to make three layers.

I could have waited until the engine was in so the transmission would hold the crank but this is how I torqued the harmonic balancer bolts. 50ft/lbs then another 90 degrees. I marked each head after the first torque to get 90 degrees more.

I didn't think it got that cold in east Texas to blanket it all up.

Nice color choice for the manifolds.

South Central Texas does Jack!
I am having issues posting again. The whole reply disappears after I click send unless I post the photos then add text. This forum is buggy.
Mishimoto sent me the same radiator I already had...they send the correct one today 2nd day air. I guess I have two spares.
I got a lot done today, had the post typed up and it disappeared when I clicked send. I’ll try tomorrow.

Shame to cover it up, me thinks.

Oh yeah, the Cerakote color is Gunmetal. I walked in his shop Yesterday and he said “bad news buddy, I didn’t have enough of the titanium color to coat your parts but I had enough gunmetal to do them all.” At this point I’ll take what I can get.
I removed my firewall insulation and added two layers of Thermo Tec Cool-It sheet and one layer on the front. It is rated for 2000 degrees radiant heat. I am on the fence about pulling it back out and adding one layer of DEI heat shield. What do you guys think? with the heat mitigation I wonder what kind of temperatures will be back there pulling a trailer when it’s over a hundred degrees this summer.

everything you do looks great, Smack. But with the insulation on that firewall, I always get a little "stomach pain". I've restored some vehicles where water got under the insulation and caused corrosion damage. I am curious about the experience of the engine bandages. I wish you further joyful screwing.

Thanks Hartwig.
There is firewall insulation there from the factory, I removed it to use for a pattern and put three layers of heat insulation on it. The area behind the insulation was still perfect, factory green paint. I don’t know what you mean by engine bandages. Are you referring to the heat blankets or the wraps? I have had no issues with the wraps. The y pipe I removed has had wraps on it for over two years and underneath it is still perfect as well. I’m not concerned about it. I looked at the seal install tools yesterday and thought of you. I will grab my micrometer first thing this morning and get your measurements!

.

I spent enough time in Pecos in the late 90’s to think about changing residency. Everything on the other side of Midland is East Texas.

(Did some testing in San Antonio too).

There have been some people mostly with headers that have had rust issues when wrapping exhaust. On the up pipes I’m not worried about it and bought wrapping after seeing Chris’ work. My intention is also the manifolds to try to protect the glow plug harness. Although I like the painted pipes. I could end up with some, or none.

i haven’t seen the manifold blankets before.

I didn’t see rust under the tunnel blanket either. Maybe it gets too warm. I’ve bought replacement non-Ford thermal block too, but not to the point of a recommendation.

The paint behind the firewall insulation looks better than what’s uncovered.
I spoke with Thermo Tec and he recommended I add a layer of this to the hot side. It will be here tomorrow. I’m working on making up Hydroboost/power steering lines and brackets for the Mishimoto power steering cooler. She should be ready to slide in Saturday!

Thermo-Tec 13590 24" X 48" Adhesive Backed Heat Barrier
