Spent this morning regear in the dana 60 rear end in my buddies 78 f250, it actually went fairly easy. Then completely had to reinforce/reweld the upper bracket on the jeep dana 30. Now hopefully it doesn't rain tomorrow and I'll pickup a battery for my truck. Then maybe fix the wiring issue I had last week while running it.
Can't decide if I should start on the diesel now or wait till after the Spring Fling. Afraid if I start now there'll be a set back and it won't be done in time...

Any shots of that Dana 30 upper control arm bracket?
No I sure didnt, it looked rough when we got done with it haha. The bracket was pretty bad, we ended up cutting out a big section of the stock bracket were it had broke so many times, then added a piece of square stock under it. After that we put a pice of 1/4" plate on the front and rear of the axle. That was welded to the bracket, and too the axle. It really didn't look all that good but should hold, and was all scrape metal we had laying around.

Just wondering. I haven't taken the time to get into the front axle of the jeep and if this was an easy upgrade, I might tackle it. And maybe justify switching out the flux core in the welder for a real wire\gas setup.

We ended up having to weld it up with a little 90amp buzz box since the old Lincoln stick welder kept burning threw.

I've been watching your build. I have a 79, so I'm in there snooping around quite a bit.

Here's my 79 Ka'Bluey
I didn't realize you were in NC. We're abouts in the state are you.
Wheres the next dinner or meet and greet at. I have the old orange monster at the point i can make long journeys relatively safe..lol
Drove it from Asheville to knoxville and back which is about a 9 hour trip but good god, no overdrive and 70 most of the way killed it in gas..lol

I'm in Apex, just outside of Raleigh. Along with two other members of the NC Chapter. And we have several other members within a 30 minute or so drive from me.
Our next dinner is in two weekends, at our "NC Chapter Camping trip. We have several sights reserved in the Uhwarrie National Forest.
I'm not real computer whoopie, but there is a thread going all about it, called "Spring Fling"!
So threw the tires back on the TJ today. I was lazy and only pulled the front tires and brakes looking for the noise..
Drove it around with Mary listening, and then Mary drove it around :O Well in 4wd it still had a hell of a noise. so Decided I needed to tear the axle shafts out and maybe the differential to check all the bearings. Got the passenger side wheel bearing off (fixed, sealed unit) and found the u-joint was done. First one from AZ was not even close.
Popped out the old u-joint pretty easily.
At the top you can see what used to be needle bearings, at the bottom, what good one's look like.
Just a little mud in the axle. This is how I polish them. Nothing wrong, but you can tell it's been through mud.
Second set of joints from AZ. Caps were the right size the joint though, well.. it took a little bit of work.
A little bit of work to get the joint in..
Ignore the BIG HAMMER... it's there for.... decoration... but the new joint finally fit... it's a miracle!
hmm.. what did I say about the new joint fitting???
Hmm.. 10 points to whoever guesses what's in my hand and where it's supposed to go... Not sure I can weld this back together..
So short of it all... I've got OEM spicers on order... I'm done with this not quite fitting OEM stuff... now there is a chance that I bent the yoke so... I made need a new outer shaft... but I'm gonna say that if I did, you may for ever call me Non Master Certified Benz Tech...
Yeah that sucks alright!
I put new ball joints and u joints in the front axle of Ka'Bluey right after we bought em'. I know that the ball joints have been replaced since, but really should look closer at every u joint on that truck. I have been under there recently with a grease gun, but just a few of the joints even took grease.
That sucks! What year is the jeep? It's got the larger dana 44 size joints in it right? Think they changed in 97 or 98. I know when we went chromo shafts in the Comanche they came as the new style larger dana 44 yokes and joint. Haven't had a problem breaking them since.
Oh and I always opt for the u joints with out grease zerks. The ones with the zerks are hollow and I shatter them within 5 passes, typically split them in half straight across the u joint.
