Not a 9" it doesn't have the gear ring hump. My search suggests that the '75 Granada would be a 8.75 but that is a non-removable housing. So I think someone changed out the RE with a 8". Does it have a ID tag on it?

Yes, that's a true 9" if it originally came out of a Granada, I'm using the same one in my roadster.

That's an 8 inch all day long. As was mentioned before, most 9 inches have a vertical hump on the rear of the axle housing to allow room for the larger ring gear. Another way to differentiate a 8" from a 9" is to look at the bottom two studs/nuts on the center section itself. The 9" diff casting has an indention made into it to access the two bottom nuts. If you can remove the two bottom nuts with a socket then it's an 8", if you can not remove the bottom nuts with a socket then it's a 9". On the 9" you have to use wrench for those nuts. The 8" rear end is decent. I used an 8" in my 65 mustang for years and never broke it (I beat it hard too), but I was only throwing about 350 horses at it. If you put that rear end behind your big block and give it a little traction, it will explode.

Good luck, hope this helps

Andy

Andy,
I had pics of the front somewhere but i think i deleted them. I think it is a 9" by your explanation because you can not get to the bottom two bolts with a socket. However I need to make sure the axels are not the same crappy ones i have in the 9" pictured before otherwise I'm starting from scratch.

Second thought I was researching. I could get a custom housing and axles with 35 splines and a new posi for 2100...

Hummm. 100 for this one or 2100 for the custom? Choices Choices!!!!

It still looks like every 8" I have ever seen. Even if it is a nine inch, I would pull an axle to check the spline count. The light duty 9" came with the same 28 splines as the 8". What you need is a 70's f100 9" with limited slip and 31 spline. They may be close to the same width as your truck.

As a side note, if that granada still has the front spindles and break setup, grab it. It can be used as a direct bolt on drum to disc swap for early mustangs and falcons. Sell them on ebay and make back your money on the rear axle.

Yo snook, sorry to hear about your bad experience. Either way you are still way head of me... lol..

I am sure you will get this worked out. I went with an 8.8" but I have to grind all brackets to fit the axle housing...

I guess that's hotrodding brotha...

Hey Snook - I also went with an 8.8 out of an explorer - Sorry to hear about your bad shop experience. I also had a "failure to launch" experience with the first shop I used - Truck sat their waiting for installation of a No Limit front suspension from June till October when I ran out of patience. Don't lose forward momentum - just a bump in the road.

Thanks for the support gentlemen. Looks like Ross (F-1) has exactly what I need. Ross I went home and put my truck all back together after seeing your truck I just couldn't stand not working on it anymore.

If things go well I'm going to pick up some new brackets and the axle from Ross this week. After that a drive shaft and some motor work.

Snook, what a great build you having going and a very detailed thread. I have enjoyed reading up on your progress. Maybe I'll see that truck rolling around ABQ in the near future. Good luck with the rest of your build.

Snook,
Bummer about the rear diff. I'm glad the one Ross has will work for you. Get that thing together and maybe you, Ross, and I can make a short cruise somewhere. I'm dying for a good excuse to dig my truck out from the garage and take a ride.
