Anyone had any expeience with an AOD for a big block (429 or 460)? Its looking like the E40D is not going to happen for a reasonable amount of $$$$ and i wont go with a tail shaft over drive unit on my C6.

If I were to not use an e4od I'd look into the 700r4 if you don't want electronics, or a 4l80 if you don't mind electronics.
You'll need an adaptor no matter what because aod was only behind sbf engines. And unless you get a lentech, you'll ruin it in no time behind a bbf.
For the money you'll spend getting something other than an e4od behind a 429/460, you could have had an e4od behind your 429/460... Know what I mean.
How much hp is your engine making. For 4-500 you can get the trans controller and I've put about 400hp into mine for years bone stock. Diesels are putting lots of torque into them. They don't have as many issues as you read about. They are great transmissions and require little upgrades for the normal person.
UNTAMND I'm so stretched thin on my budget Im' trying hard not to skimp now. I do understand what you mean but honestly I'd just like to drive my poor truck before I'm married. I just got finished reading about the Lentech AOD this afternoon. For the money they charge I'd rather try my had at the E40D and controller.
One question I do have is with an E40D do you need the stock computer and trans controller or just the controller? Oh ya and do all E40D transmissions bolt strait to the 385 serious big block? I found a core in excellent shape at the local U Pull this weekend for $130.00 and I'm hoping to get it next Saturday.
@drptop70ss my rear differential is already built with 3.50 gears. i'm not going to back track on that at this point I'll eat the full clip of bullets and build an E40D or Lentech AOD.
You'll just need the aftermarket controller for the trans I'm pretty sure. Wouldn't hurt to grab some of the wire harness if you can though.
You'll need an e4od from a 460. There is also one for the sbf but won't work. The bellhousing is integrated into the trans case.
$130 is a good core price. Ask them if the truck run and drove before they got it.
A 3:50 gear is not too low to run without overdrive, all depends on your tire height. I used to run a 3:55 with 24" high tires, spun around 2700 RPM on the highway at 65 MPH but it did it. A taller tire would help, 27" tire would get it down to around 2400 RPM at 65 MPH.
If you know the size of the tires there are plenty of online calculators that will tell you the diameter if you are not near them to measure. Also if you are running a 9" rear there are plenty of good used pigs out there with 3:00 or so gears if needed.
might have missed it, but what seats are those? I like it.
Also curious what the recommendation is for attachment.
I would worry that if welded to the floor in just one or two places, any even mild fender bender would result in the frame tearing right off the floor. Plus the floor may not support the weight very well long term. Maybe weld to a piece of flat stock or square tubing that is seam welded along the length of the floor?
The seats have a few different spots that will be bolted to the sub-frame that is built out of square tube. That sub-frame will be welded to the floor of the cab in number locations and should be plenty strong. Then I plan to put another brace below the cab for seat belts. <o> <o> For anyone curious the seats are 2011 - 2013 Ford Explorer 2nd row bench seats from a police cruiser. I purchased a lot auction of seats and kept a few sets for my toys. My items for sale including the seats can be found at the below link. <o
<ohttp://www.ebay.com/usr/snook715 <o<o The seats feel great! I'll eventually recover them but until that time comes they will work just fine for me and the vinyl will be easy to match for the door panels later. </o</o</o</o</o</o
I wouldn't weld them at all to the pan. What you need is bolts thru strong pads attached to the seat subframe, with large washers on the underside of the floor pan. Just like seat belts.
