Good News:
My rear end is off the truck being torn down for rebuild. I'm going to have new 3.50 gears, posi traction , 31 spline Axles, 11 inch vented slotted discs, and it will be finished with gloss black powder coat. Also got the rest of the frame sanded and almost ready to paint.
Bad News:
My front wheels touch the sway bar just slightly when turning fully. My rear wheels are still sitting in the garage and this waiting is killing me. My helper was enjoying his new wheels right in front of me (WTH I want to enjoy mine too LOL) Last I have a lot more work to do to put it back together.
Lookin great!...maybe modify the sway bars somehow...not sure without lookin at them...however, I dig the welds in some of the earlier pics good job...
Been a while since I updated. My rear end ended up being a car 9 inch. So we upgraded it to 3.50 posi with hardened 31 spline axles. I will have pics up this week hopefully. I really need to decide to pull the motor and cab or just keep trucking to drive it this summer. Poor shop I have my rear end at took 3 weeks to just touch it so now I'm waiting on axles but if they would have pulled it apart weeks ago we would have known earlier and I would be done. I wish I knew how to do everything I need myself!
While im waiting on my rearend I finished the Radiator Support
Couldn't think of anything else to do so i did this. Next up is the headlight bar/grill. Wonder how well that will look black. Next up I guess is the frame.
The shop doing my rear end has 1 more week. Then im taking it back and going somewhere else. I really feel like they are bs.ing around and not even working on it and they dont understand why they are wasting my summer crusing time.
Good News is I have my housing and axles back. Bad news is this shop I was using just wasted 3 months of my time and I wasted a ton of money. Apparently this axle housing has not strength and wont hold up under 500+ HP which is my ultimate goal. Also the bearings are wrong I guess because they are ball bearings. FML!!!!
P.s. Anyone who is experienced in measuring for axle width would be much appreciated if they could suggest to me how to do it. I'm going to prob go with a custom Currie housing and axles! Also if there is a possibility someone could tell me which ford vehicless had the strongest rear housings that were near 61 inches in overall length (mounting surface to mounting surface) I would appreciate it.
So sorry you got taken to the cleaners like that. There are a lot of resources on the web with info on 9's. Google search for Ford 9" identification and you will get the info you desire and then some. Too bad about yours. Are you sure the unit is not repairable?
I have a 65 model HD 9" and I put Strange 31 spline axles in it with the proper bearings (also from Strange, got the bearings mounted to the axles from the factory), a Detroit Tru-trac and Wilwood disc brakes. Strange's website has instructions on how and what to measure.
If you get it from Currie you can get the housing the length you want and they will set the axles and everything up for you from the factory. You don't need to bother with the details. They can even set up the center section. You can get the whole thing from them and have it ready to bolt in.
Thanks Grizz. FML = F*** my life! I was pretty upset yesterday but after some searching yesterday evening I'm thinking of picking up another axle locally soon. I will see what's out at the local U-Pull and Pay first before going all out on a currie. My budget and timelines are shot so im thinkin i dont need to rush this. I'm going to bold the axel i have now back up turn my truck around so i can get my motor out and cab off and just go all the way to bare frame.
Can someone point me in the right direction to identify this rearend? It comes out of this 1975 Ford Granada. I'm trying to find out if I should buy and pull it at the local junk yard. Lengthwise it will work but I need to know if it is a true 9 inch rear.
