Split hairs much? What do you think creates that tractive force? Rear-wheel torque.

At a given vehicle speed, a higher-horsepower motor, geared properly, is capable of producing more rear-wheel torque than a lower-horsepower motor. Translation: Better acceleration, and/or the ability to move a heavier load.

You can call it whatever you want, but it is the same thing. Same exact thing. Axle torque and rear-wheel torque will always be identical (unless you break an axle).

And what was subsequently being pointed out was that an automatic might allow you to spin the motor up to its horsepower peak. If you can do that, the higher-horsepower motor would produce more rear-wheel torque than the lower horsepower motor. Regardless of the torque rating of the motor.

v-10 vs psd

u guys sure like to drag this out.
u no i have nothing to prove
after owning 3 v10 i have no disire to buy a dsl!
then i talk to guy that owns several psd dsl and he constantly in the shop fixing something on them. and he is a bussness man! u would think the man would get him self a v-10 and see how it does after spending several thousands of dollars fixing his psd's.
i whent almost 265000 before i had a miss fire. and after i found that problem im currently at almost 350000 on. the engine has never been crack open, except for valve covers and timing chain cover looking for miss fire. the intake was takin off and the intake ports look pretty clean. there was very little ware on the cams. this not babyed engine. i use to haul rvs all over usa and canada plus ak. the engine run in well past -20 degrees and was run wif it over 100 degrees all wif trl on its back. it never seen a wrecker!
MY FORD MECHANIC SWARES AND DECLARES THAT WILL GET 500,000 !!! we r not far from that. she is not rattling run pretty good im not sure if is as strong as my other v-10 i have. i change the oil every 4,000 miles wif couple qtr's of lucus synthic wif the semi blend.she uses a qt or so around 3 to 4,000. but she dosent smoke.

so u have to ask ur self is that dsl worth that 7,000+$[going higher] option? psd fuelmilage is not that spectacular. dsl fuel is higher and going higher. it cost more to fix them and serv. them. its very hard for me to justfy a psd. yea they will most likley out pull a v-10, but ur going to pay for that.
psd im not impressed.

Snowtoad, good post. You just demonstrated a point that I've been trying to make all along. Everyone seems to act like the PSD engines will last forever, and that the gas motors are inherently inferior in this capacity.

I've tried to point out the guy with the million mile 5.4, but nobody pays much attention.

I, too, would love to see someone who's had such a painless ownership experience with a PSD over that many miles. That doesn't mean the PSD isn't a great engine, though. Just means that many of the diesel crowd doesn't understand that longevity isn't necessarily something it has over the V10.

Ilike my 5.4 3v... I have no desire to buy a V10 or a PSD...

I am looking forward to many many miles. I have had 302's and 351's, and put many miles on them. I am hopeing for the same with my 5.4

By your statement I must be lucky with all of my psd's. My current pickup is at 190k and the only issue I have had is an oil leak which cost me $25 to fix. I think you guys tend to live in a fantasy land thinking psd's are in the shop all the time. Since I have owned my current pickup I have spent less than $1500 in repairs. The only repair to the motor was the oil leak mentioned. The rest of the repairs were from wear on the suspension components.

If the psd option is up to 7k that is crazy! IIRC I paid half that.
