Gassers don't make the cool noises, and stinky smells that the diesels do.

I have 3.73's behind my 6.0. Mixed driving I get 17 MPG, and on a long highway trip I can get as much as 22 MPG (depending on avg speed). This has remained true over the 100K miles I've driven this vehicle.

I have had the same year IDI and 460, the difference is night and day. Just look at the power and torque numbers, they sum it all up.

Now that there's 400 HP diesel pick-ups, everyone seems to think they need that to get a job done... I'm not such a thinker.

I like my diesel cause I can put whatever trailer I want on it, and it hums down the highway in cruise without shifting all over. I could'nt care less if it redlined at 2500 RPM's as long as it had the same TQ down low.

I get a kick out of people fighting over diesel and other engine outputs, using peak RPM as the arguing point, like who really drives a truck like that? Its all about the TQ !
So you would be happy with an engine that makes 1500 ft lbs at 1 rpm?

A few key points that have been mentioned here, and they need to be listed:

1) Maintenance costs of the PSD can (and do) outweigh it's benefits, when compared to occasional towing heavy with the V10 and higher fuel consumption.

2) Longevity as mentioned for both the PSD and V10, there are many examples of V10's living long productive lives worked hard, going over 200K miles, all the way to 300K and beyond. Meanwhile, 7.3's seem to last forever. However, I'd love to see specific examples of PSDs (7.3, 6.0, 6.4) that have had a minimum of unplanned maintenance in 300K miles.

And when I say unplanned, it can be things like the infamous 7.3 CPS leaving you on the side of the road, which IS catastrophic in terms of making money or leaving you and your family w/the TT on the side of a highway with no rescue in sight. Or, blowing a plug on a V10 - which by the way, doesn't leave you stranded on the side of the highway, it's just noisy. Or broken exhaust studs. Or blowing the intercooler tube off the turbo and limping without a turbo. Big or small $'s, anything that stops you in your tracks while making money or traveling with the family is HUGE.

3) Fuel economy. Diesel hands-down. Just not as big a difference as many would make it to be, especially when left stock.
Your right I shouldn't have posted that. I'm not taking it back though.
I think you know I agree w/ you all the way. 1st sentice to the last. I've done my share of defending the v10 and argued that the psd has a higher maintaince cost. You know my points. These engines are what they are. That's that. They work differently. If the driver knows his tool he'll get his job done. That's what matters. I love the superduty period whatever is in it. For yrs everyone told me I needed a ton truck to do what I do. I didn't like em before the 99 SDs. I don't know how I went so long not really noticeing them. But when I did. Boy oh boy. I'm smiten. I really don't care for the 5.4l in the SD. I really love the 5.4l but its just a great disadvantage in my opinion. It needs to much gearing I think. Its a very outstanding in a 1/2 truck w/ a gvwr of 11k lbs. Yes I use to haul heavier w/ mine and that was w/ 4:11 gears too. I'm not saying the 5.4 can't do it I'm just saying I don't like it.
When somebody makes a point different than common knowledge I like to learn it. But when the person can't bring the data to show what their talking about it gets real aggravating. I'm not a smart person, but I understand how these machines and physics work.

But again, let's leave the price at the same, and call it $2.99/gal which is on the low end of what I've paid for gas over the past 10 years.
We live in worlds apart. 05 and 06 fuel was same price or within .10 of each other around here. 07 fuel hit $5 gal. Gas was .30 cheaper. The biggest difference in price was in 08 when fuel got .50 higher for 2 weeks. In end of 08 until mid 09 fuel was cheaper than gas.
What is sad here is I put more miles on my truck while fuel was cheaper than your truck has on it. Where does that fit in the equation?

That's basically my entire point. I do not know WHAT is good FOR YOU.

For me, I am VERY HAPPY with what I did, and doing the math I did above, I can actually justify what I did, money-wise.

On the other hand, I can easily justify spending twice as much on fuel, and having $0 trade-in because I never EVER have to smell diesel fuel ever again.

Too many bad memories

Yup to everything you said. If my math is right 37k miles over 10 yrs is 370 miles a year. I think at least on 6.0 and 6.4ls you'd done had several mucked up turbos. You really aught to be ashamed of your self. That poor truck. Tell ya what send it down here and I'll rotate it out and but it to use. Give it a life it deserves. Lol

No it wasn't a typo. I knew it was 3700 but I put in 370. I thought it looked funny.

So have I.....and I've witnessed the constant beating of a dead horse for its duration. That particular post made more sense than many here.
