But I thought the discussion wasn't about 100% WOT operation, but REAL WORLD use?
That can get awfully subjective and hard to quantify, but keeps the goal of 1000 pages easily in our sights.
Seeing that changing to a taller gear to gain a mechanical advantage and apply more torque to the wheels is beneficial on a gasser, wouldn't you rather have a diesel, which makes more torque at the flywheel to start with, and be able to power through those tires. Once up to cruising speed, the diesel can hum along at a couple thousand RPM's(or less) reducing wear on the motor, and getting better mileage all the while?
Then again gas engines have their advantages as well. Not just the lower maintenance costs etc, but the ease of use, not having to look for a station with diesel (which can be fun in a strange city), and noise. I have been to campgrounds where you are forbidden to start your truck if it is a diesel after 10PM. Kind of cheesed me off at the time I'll add. Or neighbors making comments about how much noise it makes when it is warming up in the driveway on a cold morning. It still just boils down to what suits each of us the best and makes us the happiest.

God I'm glad I don't have neighbors unless chickens count. Then again I don't warm my truck up either.
Minus 30 to minus 50 temps call for some warm up. I wish I didn't have any neighbors and had some land somewhere. Nothing worse than a bunch of loud mouths partying until 4 or 5 am when you have to get up and go to work.

that would not fly with me. i would kindly walk over and when i got done talking to them (probably using alot of sentence enhancers) they would be saying yes sir to me when i left. i learned that technique in texas from dealing with people in hotels. gotta love drug addicts!
We have one of the families that live on our street that would have been best left back in the woods so to speak... The police have been called to their house on several occasions now.

See, at one time, that situation would have been one of the biggest pros of a diesel to me. Living in an apartment next to a loud, late night neighbor, who also had a car with an overly sensitive alarm. I would have parked the truck in an appropriate position next to the car, then let it warm up for 30-45 minutes while I got ready every morning. Even on the mornings when it was 80 degrees outside. You keep me up with you until 2 AM, I get you up with me at 5 AM.
Brother I disagree. That calls for a relocation. Lmao. I can hardly stand the few days we have 18 deg. Temps.
If it hits 0 I'm gone.
There's no way I could live in town. You own a SD relocate their car a couple blocks. After couple days of walking in the cold to find their car they might shutup.
i'm with exiled, i would relocate somewhere warmer. me and my wife usually plan us a vacation the last of jan or in feb to somewhere in the carribbean. this yr we missed out on 8in of snow (thats alot for west tn) while in jamaica, grand cayman, and cozumel. i love cruising. we need to have an annual fte cruise to shake the winter blues.
just thought about it and we may have to scratch the annual cruise. the boats run off diesel and i don't know if we could handle a bunch of v 10 guys feining for gas fumes. just kidding!

W/. Tenn? Hmmm not far from me at all. You aint kidding. We got so much snow this year I had to check the gps to make sure I wasn't in canada. Lol. Then having a F5 tornado rip thru my pasture is all the excitement I can stand for 1 year.
You're both in Tenn.? When my wife and I drove down to Orlando a few years ago be both picked Tenn. as the nicest looking state we traveled through. Especially around Chattanooga.
