I think it was more "I don't care to" than anything when it came to picking apart your posts. Its pointless arguing with closed minded people.

Took my 7.3 X on a 3+hour round trip yesterday to pick up a 2000# walk in cooler unit with my dad.

Filled up with diesel at $3.94 a gallon, looked over and saw 87 octane was also $3.94. So after putting $100 in and getting 3/4's of a tank we were on our way. I reset the lie-o-meter since it was the first trip after being pulled out of storage and figured I'd leave it alone for this whole summer to see what my average is over the summer.

So we made the trip, picked up the cooler, and drove back without a hiccup the whole way, cruise set at 70mpg and that sweet sweet 7.3 just humming along at 2K rpm's. Pulled in the yard and checked the meter 17.1MPG.

So diesels are better!

Here, 93 octane is around $4.50, diesel is around $4.60. I can get 87 octane at around $4.20, maybe a bit lower if I shop around.

3 hours at 70MPH, is 210 miles.

I've done 70MPH with 1500lbs in the bed, and about 1000lbs on a trailer behind me (2500lbs), and did 550miles round trip. And got 15MPGs.

Your cost for your trip at my diesel prices, and 17.1MPG: $56.49
My cost for your trip at my 87 octane prices, and 15MPG: $58.80

Now, my 500 mile trip was into Pennsylvania and then into Upstate NY, and where I went, I did have to pull a few grades. And I idled the truck quite a bit while digging through a junkyard for parts for my brother. And still got 15mpgs.

And still did 2K rpms on the highway.

Not sure what your advantage was there.

Hey Bill!

I bet you had no idea this thread would still be alive and well 2 years after you started it! It seems to get new people over the months while others drop out. I wonder who is still active in this thread that were here in the beginning? When I say beginning, I mean like from the first 10 pages or so.

I'm still here sorting through the info determining what is garbage and what is useful. My first post was on page 4.

I was wondering what happened to ChargerFan and his son?

1 you are comparing the highest diesel prices in your area.
2 he was hauling walk in cooler, what I belive is 7-8 feet tall box, you hauled flat load. Per my experience the weight has little effect on mpg, the air drag cost by the load does.

You're right! This one makes #147 for me! There is a lot of BS in this thread, but there is also a lot of good information. If a person were looking for a truck, and they wanted to know specifics about the different engines available, they could find it here in this thread, if they wanted to go through almost 11500posts!!

I didn't say WHAT my load was, you assume it was flat - it was, just not in the plane that you are assuming On the front of the trailer was a 1957 F600 cab, among other things. Backwards. I am 5'8", the top of the cab was about 2 feet above my head.

Even WITH diesel and 87 octane gas being the same, do you really think 15 and 17.1 MPGs is that far apart to quibble about? Diesel around here is $4.60/gal - EVERYWHERE. I even used one of the higher prices for 87 octane, instead of the lowest.

Again, just because it works out FOR YOU, doesn't mean it works out for everyone else.

Oh, and for the record, I was doing 70-80MPH all the way, except for low speed limits, which were mostly non-existent.

Forgive me, I'm assuming your talking about your 6.8l. I'm on mobile and can't see your sig. Anyway I'm not disputing your milage. That's not my department. I just wanna say your lucky. Nobody around here can get 15 mpg mt. Tell me how you do it so I can pass it on. That's a big problem for my buddy. I started letting him park his trailer on my lot so he doesn't have to dead head just to pickup his trailer. 13 mpg is best he has gotten mt. Which I know of others getting less.
Its always been amazing to me how much different fuel prices can be. Its why I always check prices to where I'm going before I settle on a price.

First, I have 3.73 gears. They hurt me hauling very heavy, and I hardly ever do.

Also, there is a trick to getting the best gas mileage from my V10.

When accelerating at low RPMs, there is a point where I push the go-pedal down and it stops adding torque. If I back off to just slightly less than that, I can easily get 15+ mpgs on the highway. Empty, I've gotten 17 doing that.

If I just push the go-pedal down and let the computer and tranny do it's thing, the mileage goes into the toilet.

No lie, no tall tales. ALSO - keeping the MAF clean, and the fuel filter changed helps tremendously.

Not so sure I'd beleve the lie-o-meter.
