I had 120k on the original CPS when ford decided to change them for a new design under a recall. Now have another 38k on that one and as of yet I have never bought a cps.
In fact it was such a big deal locally here in farm country where we have a LOT of diesels running around that the local ford dealer only kept 1 in stock at a time. and sometimes it would sit on the shelf for a year at a time before someone needed one replaced.
Edit to add: I know about a dozen guys with V10s and have never actually met anyone that has spit a plug, although I did hear of a guy that supposedly knows someone that has a Brother in law whos cousin knew this guy that had to have his towed in cause it spit one out.
ok since you asked
I have a boat thats 26 foot long and about 7k plus
I sold my 6.0 gasser because it just had a bad time on hills
I mean redlined and doing 40mph
finally the transmission started to make a tinging noise under load so I sold it
it was an 05 2500hd and great around town but I wanted to go to Powell etc so I just figured Diesel
I bought My PSD 2 years ago when the economy took a crap the week after lol anyway I haven't had a chance to tow my boat
it seems like the diesel and it's lower rpm's would be less stress on the transmission ? and the less rpm's less stressful on me ?
anyway I guess I just need to try it out and see
I do know the maintanance on the PSD is $$ between oil changes at $100 fuel filters $100 but the rest is the same PM as the v10 I think
WOW...almost 700 pages in this thread...it has to be a nightmare for the admins system!
Anyway...am I reading your post right...you've had your PSD for 2 years and you haven't hitched up yet???
I can only speak to my 2V V10 with 4.30's in my Excursion and my 9000# travel trailer that I routinely tow all over the country. I've been thru the Rockies twice, the Big Horns once, the Black hills once, the Appalachians once, the Smokies multiple times and I'm headed back to the Rockies this summer and will also cross the Big Horns again. After this next summers travels my 11 and 13 year old daughters will have been in 40 of our 50 states...so we travel quite a bit as a family in this V10!!!
What I have learned in my 20,000+ miles of towing with the V10 is to not baby it. It is a SOHC motor that loves to rev. It is a totally different animal than a PSD. The HP/Trq curve is flat but I have learned thru trial and error that I can pull all "hills" outside of the Rockies at 70mph but the secret is to hit the hill at 3200RPM's which for my 4.30 geared truck is 70mph which is a tad faster than I prefer to drive but in order to maintain the hill at speed and not downshift to 2nd it is required...I've played a lot with different scenarios while towing with my V10 the last 5+ years and I have not met a hill I can't climb at any speed I wish too...
The only hills that really pushed the V10 were Vail and Loveland passes on I-70 when we were coming from Bryce, Zion and Arches in Utah...I was only able to maintain ~55mph going up those passes...but the funny thing when I was pulling those passes all the cars I was traveling with up those passes that were unloaded and simply driving up those passes were also going 55mph and the big rigs with their turbo monster motors were going 15mph in the right hand lane with flashers on...so even those passes (10,600' and 11,200' respectively) with a normally aspirated gas motor were not that taxing when rolling at 17,000#'s combined for my 4.30 geared V10 and I do not expect any issues this summer on my 4500 mile trek thru North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota and home!
Point of the story...you should not have any issues with 7000#'s behind your PSD! ... I think your issue was you had a GM gasser ...
Thanks for the input .. guy's
I know 2 years and I have not towed my boat ,, sad ,,
the CPS comment was a joke ,, based on my forum readings and bantering between the 7.3 and 6.0 brothers
anyway I appreciate all the input

Rightfully so, All trucks have an Achilles Heel! My buddy Paul carried CPS's in the glove box of his 97 7.3! My uncle carries 1 in his work truck too. Our 6leakers could put a pretty smoke cloud out the back too, and not in a cool batman way! The Mod motors could dent their hoods with plugs, They all break somewhere sometime!

I figured it was, just wanted to make sure it doesn't sound like they go out every time you turn around....
Some guys definately have more problems with CPS than others, there also is quite a variety in quality shocking, right!
Must be a Murphy law. When I bought my SP with 7.3 about 5 years ago, I read a lot about CPS failures, so I bought an extra one. It was used CPS from ebay. Just to make sure I can do it and to test the used CPS -I replaced it. So 5 years/40k miles later I am still driving on the used CPS from ebay, while the original one is in my glove compartment with 10 mm wrench.

Joe.
Yah passing a Semi truck going up a Hill is not really a high point for our trucks considering we typically haul 1/10 of what they lug around.
The legal weight for an eighteen wheeler is 80,000 lbs. [40 tons].[ 36287 kg Canadian] That is without any oversize or overweight permits. In comparison, the average automobile weighs over somewhere around 5,000 lbs.
