I can't see a 5.4 towing much in my book at least not up a grade and I have tried and I was white knuckled at 4k towing,,
It might not tow like a V10 or a newer powerstroke, but it can tow heavyloads just fine.
In the late 80s and early 90s the 180 HP cummins, 170 HP IDI and 240 HP 460 and 454 were thought of as beasts for towing. So why would the 5.4 not be able to tow the same loads? Towing 4k with a 4 cylinder ranger is white knuckle. With any superduty with any engine its nothing.
dang I guess to be fair you would have to break it down to units sold /complaints filed / and even factor in the form of how complaints were filed because the internet opened up a whole new arena for that
i guess we better include how many 6.0 complaints were using tuners that raised the hp and torque beyond factory specs. my 6.0 has never has seen a tuner and made it to 200000 miles before i needed an egr cooler and injectors. the later was my fault because i treated it like my 7.3 and didn't change my oil regularly plus used aftermarket filters. mech showed me how oil leaks back from filter after shutdown which causes long start times with no oil flowing. so i guess we better include guys like me in the equation for bad service intervals too
Anywhere, everywhere. Google is your friend. It's not hard to form an opinion if you search "6.0 power stroke" in google.
Brother in your google search you can find john does saying that the 6.0 was put out of service becausenf this, that, and the other. Go to offical sites and you'll see why 6.0l was replaced. Now I never denied that the 6.0 ever had problems so I don't know what your trip is. The fact of the matter is that by 06 the 6.0 was a very reliable and stable engine. I've been working around dmaxes, cummins, v10s, 5.4s since Thurs. Hauling supplies communties destroyed. Just this even a guy came up to me as we where unloading pallets of water of my trailer not believing I was working a 6.0l and cutting the path.
It really surprises me the guys here still sacraficing 100 or more ftlbs of tq for just a few hp. This just shows how much folks don't know about working a truck. A 5.4l will never out pull a psd w/ a 7.3 or newer. I like the 5.4l I think even better than the 6.2l. 100 ftlbs is a big difference but where talking 200 ftlbs here. This makes big big difference. I don't care you have 300 hp.
Who thinks those google results are an accurate representation of anything?
I think there is a very good representation there. You shows you that when your at the top of the pile and when your most inportant customers "EMT services" depends on you the working force you don't rush a viable compondant "the engine" to market. Not to mention when its ground breaking technology, its out sourced so your company doesn't know how it works or how to work on it. Untell the 6.0 the US diesel world hasn't seen anything like it. Its picky about its oil changes, its fuel it burns. Doesn't like to sit there and idel. All these things earlier diesels didn't care about and kept going. Now we know.
I've read 3 different stories about Fords in house PSD. Seems like in 99 the PSD department had a 5.8L the pitched but was turned down. Ford SD powers to be thought that going down in displacement would kill the SD sells. International bought the blueprints on the 6.0 and Ford bought into it. But the PSD version is tuned up over the intern. Engine. I've read that project scorpion started in 05 and 08. So I don't know if they started in 05 and had a working unit in 08 or what.
Its just for the point that's being made the google problem results don't mean much. Just because there's 100's of thousands of claims doesn't mean its why something was removed. Even wiki says that 6.0 was dropped for the 07 fuel mandate.
What I'm saying is to don't hate the results hate how they are being used. If you have a 6.0l and love it just know your not alone. I pull the green out of grass with mine.
Not alot, my concern is the cost of future repairs. It looks like when something fails on the 6.4 it is never something simple. The failures are very expensive cab off repairs that even Ford techs are saying they wouldn't want to own one off of warranty. Also owning a diesel is not like it was. Gone are the days of mileage up in the 20's with ease and diesel prices that were half or less than that of gas. Usually when I fuel up it is about 15% to 20% more for diesel fuel. I decided to give up on it and go back to gas. No worries about 7 to 10k to change a fuel pump or even having to keep conditioner and gloves behind my seat in a pail to fuel up with. Life with gas is just simpler and cheaper. Unless you really need the higher power levels for towing on a regular basis owning a diesel just does not make sense to me, especially when you live somewhere that gets down as low as -50 or worse and it snows 6 or more months a year. Diesel always appealed to me as I was a truck driver for many years and close to a million miles before becoming an operator.
