yes, all 4x4 were factory shortbed. Yours was converted at sometime in its life. Either it is a converted 2wd frame or it has been stretched
Guy I bought it from was the original owner and that's what he told me. He used to work for ford and had it special ordered. Not exactly sure why he would lie about it. Not sure how to tell if it's been stretched, the frame is one solid piece with no extensions welded to it. Definitely not a conversion from 2 wheel drive though. I am very curious about it now though.
Post a picture of the warranty plate on the drivers door.
I did notice the plate had the wheel base at 150" but it actually 166". Just seems like a whole lot of trouble to take apart a f 250 crew cab completely put it on a 2 wheel drive f 350 frame just to get a long bed. The frame is one piece it has not been cut and lengthened.
Anyone converted a leaf sprung suspension on the front on an early crew cab 73 - 79 to coil sprung
When I am through lifting the 75 supercab and getting it on the road which should be very quickly I'm going to start on my 73 crew cab. My question has anybody converted their front leaf spring suspension to coil or coilover sprung, using the Dana 60s or high pinion heavy duty Dana 44s. If anyone has, please post pictures that would be great, this is something that I will be doing for sure but just wondering if there's people out there who have any opinions on this or insights

If you cannot see where the frame was stretched all that means is the person seemingly did a good job.
Your warranty plate decodes as:
F28 - 4x4 cab and chassis (aka it didn't come with a bed)
Y - 360 2bl
C - Ontario built
FM - Dark Ginger Metallic
F281 - 7600 cab and chassis
Axles - D60F/R
Sold to - Denver area
I would say the owner custom ordered the truck knowing he was going to stretch the frame to put a long-bed on it.
1979 F-350 Ranger XLT 460 auto longbed 1-owner 85,000 Texas rust free miles. I recently purchased a 1979 single cab with perfect race track chrome for parts. Have wanted an old Ford crew for a long time

Ford never offered a longbed 4x4 crew from 73-79.
Nice truck!
I agree nice truck.
But for taking it offroad that long wheelbase would be easy to get high centered in. I had a 78 Bronco and it was awesome four wheeling because it had such a short wheel base and a very tight turning radius.
Just thinking, maybe that's why they didn't make long bed crew cab 4x4 trucks.

Not everyone that uses 4wd will be going over stuff to get the truck high centered. I will even say 99.99% won't go over stuff to get high centered. I would think most would have common sense and know what their truck limits are.

Thanks, I think it's a nice truck as well. Got lucky finding this one. The guy took very good care of it.

Wow. 226 pages. not sure I'll ever read the whole thread. Lolol.
Here's my new toy. trying to get it shipped from Seattle right now.
It's a 78. I believe it was originally a forestry truck.
300 six, granny 4 speed, 2WD with a leveling kit.
plans are to put the body on my 6.0 Super Duty 4X4 chassis and add a ZF-5 and a long bed. I really want an F-350 bed if I can find one.
I was watching this truck on eBay. Looks like a solid truck. Keep us in the loop on the project. Where are you located? Just curious on the shipping cost.

I like this as im currently doing the same. 78 CCSB on a 06 F350 6.0 drivetrain. The 06 is a long bed so the frame will be shortened. Please make sure to make a build thread as ill be following closely.
I was also watching this truck on eBay, if its as good as it looks you got a steal!!
