Crewcab Only Thread.
Nice score ! _ _ _ and it made it over the pass !
I purchased a mechanic's special '78 F250 Crew 4x4, from a local Logging Company, and drove it in reverse on back roads to get it home.
The supposed "recent rebuilt 400M I bought off the trader paper had stuck rings. De-carboning the rings by removal was tedious.
The 400M in the truck had a Rod Knock of course, so that was the reason for the Trader paper re-furb engine.
I actually drove that dang pickup for a year with the rod knock. hahaha _ _ then swapped engines
The C6 in the pickup I took to my fav trans rebuilder and had him freshen it up. _ _ I sold the pckup to a Fed-Ex guy who pulled me over to ask.
In the meantime, I was "constructing" the '77 F350 Crew that I still keep running, licensed and insured.
When I converted the F350 2wd Chassis to 4x4, I simply used '76 F250 4x4 front springs, shackles and frame brackets.
The F350 2wd was a Long-Bed pickup, and I needed an 8-foot bed, and found one off of a Std cab '78 F250 with fuel doors. _ bonus.
If you are trading-up on Crews, that is Cool. _ _ Even some of the Gen-Z guys like the early Crews. _ _ the Crew's are just Nostaligic.
Seems like you were making good progress on it.
I picked up a 76 F350 back in 2018...finally getting back to it and basically started over. Truck started it's original life as a chassis cab truck. I was going to put it on an 01 7.3/ ZF6 Powerstroke SD chassis cab rolling chassis. After recent research, I changed things up and went with a SD CC chassis as the 79 bed bolts right up. During the frame shortening process, we discovered the frame was bent up front...so we had to use 2 different chassis to make 1.
This is how i got it. It doesn't have the correct mirrors, but i'll eventually fix that
This is where we got to back in 2018 on 01 chassis cab
This is where we are now. next step is to cut off SD cab mounts and reposition them for the 76 cab
I bought this F100 back around 2018 as well and was going to use it as a donor...but not sure anymore. Might just keep it as is and rebuild the 460 and do bodywork on the crewcab

I kept the '77 F350 longbed 2wd chassis for the OEM Vin originality. _ _ _ maybe just Nostalgia. I happened across the F350 Cab / Chassis looking for a Rear Door. _ go figure !
The seller of the door said you get the door with the Cab / Chassis. So, it looked as tho I was buying a F350 Cab / Chassis. The cab was shook to pieces.
The first Crew that got me into this, was a '77 F250 2wd shortbox with a no-cancer cab with dents. That cab got placed onto the F350 Chassis.
The only part original to my '77 F350 is the bare chassis. All else got changed out to what I wanted, including the 4x4 conversion. _ _ it's been a very Fun pickup to own.
Looking back, I pulled the 400M from the F350 chassis and then built up a stout little 300 Six Gasser with Clifford intake and Huper pistons, etc.
Wist til you get that on the road and pull into fueling stations ! _ _ even the young bucks will have comments or ask to buy it. _ LoL
I built it up before internet, and the only 8-foot bed that came available per Trader-Paper ad, was off of a Std Cab 4x4 F250 that had fuel doors. _ bonus.
I plucked the belly tank from the F250 cab donor and mounted it under the F350, so that tank has a Furel door. And, I did keep the in-cab tank for originality.
Enjoy the cab mounts.
How I get factory rivets out is to drill a 1/8=inch hole thru the rivet. Next, you now have a hole for the red-wrench to easily pre-heat for cutting.
Cut the hole bigger, wiith one sweep to cut thru the OD of the rivet in the frame hole.
That will relieve the rivet to now Punch it out. With the pilot hole, your pre-heat is quck for the rivet cutting so not taking any temper away from that area.
I probably should have tried to keep it more original but opted for the diesel for whatever reason and wasn't sure how the 76 chassis would do. I'm sure it would have been fine. Not sure what the best choices would be...now I've been thinking about another truck or car with a Godzilla or something, but would also like something as original as possible, or at least era correct. I don't even really have the money for this project anymore, so 1 at I time, I suppose. Always nice to have a wish list or dream though
I told my 21 yr old he can keep the truck in my sig at his place if he wants...he said he wants the 76 crew, LOL!!! I said you can have it when I die. My 2 youngest kids call my old trucks dinosaurs/ prehistoric...going to have to watch some of the older movies or something to hope they can learn some appreciation
I've been cutting off the superduty mounts, they are all welded. I'll be using the superduty mounts with S&B bushings. We did have to replace the rear spring hangers though. We used to heat up the rivets with the torch, knock the heads off and punch em through. This time i opted to cut an X in the head method...that actually worked extremely quick and easy...easier than anything i've tried before.
I think I have decided to stick to the original plan and sacrifice the 73/74 F100....I need the whole front clip, doors, bed/ tailgate. My buddy will take the 460 for his 79 bronco. I'll probably also take the front floor pans as the 76 is rusted out; which is kind of odd for a Colorado/ Texas truck (although the previous owner had it outside with windows down for who knows how many years).
I would like to keep at least the top mouldings but not sure where to find them for the rear doors and between the doors....or someone that can modify them.
I'm also curious if anyone adds in roof supports but we're a long way from really needing to worry about that.
INFRNL's other Crew ?
Hey INFRNL, I gave that alot of consideration when working the roof dents out ( from PO's kids walking on the roof. I was thinking of rupports out of an E series Van.
Looking back, I wish I had, but my headliner board was nice and straight, so I figured my kids won't be on the roof. _ _ or their bottoms would heat up ! _ LoL
I was reading a comparison of the 5l0 Coyote vs the 351w engines.
The article said both engines can be taken to 900 hp easily and can handle it.
The differences are - The 351w has low to med rpm Torque, where the Coyote 5.0 power starts coming on at 4,000 rpms on up. _ _ so if you're gonna TOW, it is 351w.
I'm running a D7TE 429 in my E250 4x4 Van. I had it balanced and hyper pistons to bump it to 9:1 with mid-range Crane cam and valve train w roller rocker.
The roller rockers are for individual adjuestment of the hyd lifters.
I slipped a '79 F350 Dana 60 king pin acle under the front using '85 AMC Wagoneer front springs and frame mounts with spring over, and cross over steering.
Everything is from Fords. The overload spring packs were sourced from a '71 One ton dually. The overload frame persches came off a late '80;s F350 with the poly cushion for the overload springs to rest against when loaded. _ _ all fun stuff.
From what I've read, the Crew Cabs up to '79 didn't have Fuel Doors. _ _ only Std Cab pickups.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Seems like you were making good progress on it.
My white one or the multi colored rig?
Here's one more shot of mine. I drove it to work yesterday. It made the trip fine except the power steering whine is super annoying.
