That scared the hell out of me! I was on my way home from my mom's house showing off my truck and I blew the turbo pipe off! The one that I recently fixed that was bent. It blew it right off and scared the hell out of me! That's the first time I've had that happen while going down the road like that!
I sprayed the pipe in with brake cleaner before I pushed it into the tube so I thought it would be okay, but it blew off anyway!
The key to keeping boots from blowing off is a squeaky clean assembly - NO OIL. Brake cleaner and clean rag to get oil off, then assemble while wet with a little more brake cleaner. (Assssuming tight clamps...)
The first time that happens under load/boost, it’ll wreck a good set of undies and make you sick thinking the truck is BROKEN!
It happens to a lot of us and is considered a bit of a right of passage. I had a boot blow off on I-26 east bound at ~32 PSI boost with the MST. It popped off another 3 times before I could get it off the road to a safe area.
You made a smart choice to use brake cleaner, but you need to clean both surfaces really well. The boot and the hard part.
If you look closely, you can see me at the front doing my best to get the boot to stay on. That was the day I started carrying brake cleaner and a 24" extension for a 3/8" ratchet to get to the clamps by the hot radiator.

We had our 4 legged furry family members (dogs) with us as we always do and she decided to take them up the hill a bit in the shade. I didn't know about the picture until we had arrived at the beach, 3 hours later than we were supposed to.
The Ranch Hand is a life saver for stuff like this too. I have not used my DIY tow hook platforms since I installed the Ranch Hand.

I thought I threw a rod or something! But the truck was still idling until I got off the road so I knew that wasn't the case. Only tried putting it on we realized how slick it was. I haven't been cleaning the oil at all. That made me feel stupid.

I wasn't pushing that much boost though! I still have a stock turbo! When my up pipe start leaking I'm going to do a rebuild kit on the turbo from riff raff. Along with an ebpv delete. And bellowed up pipes of course. Even then I won't be pushing that much boost! I didn't clean the oil off! I think that's why it came off. I forgot about cleaning the oil off completely. Went right out of my head! She's back on now!
If it's a rite of passage, am I part of the tribe now?
@Hyakkimaru , cleaning the CAC pipes will only get you far. Fabricate a ring out of 1/8” rod to drop into the grooves on the ends of the CAC tubes. This gives the boot clamp something to wedge up against when boost tries to push the tube out of the boot.

I need this on my passenger side top pipe! You may remember I bent the pipe itself because the clamp slipped of and sat wrong thus bending the edge in. Ever since then, even after straightening the pipe, the clamp will not go on. Every time I try to tighten it, it starts slipping inward off the pipe. Even if I hold it there and tighten it, as soon as I let go, it slips inwards off the pipe. The boot is of course in its groove when It does this. My guess is somehow the pipe is still angled inwards just enough to make the clamp slip. It looks straight after I fixed it though. But, we had a time getting that clamp on last night. It just kept sliding off the pipe! I hope it was because of the oil. Heres the pipe after my repair. I think it looks good but, the clamp just slips right of the edge. We even put the clamp out of the 2 allignmet stripes and further away from the inside of the pipe and it would still end up sliding of the end.

Is that the end that connects to the spider? Don’t put a ring in that groove. Get a RiffRaff boot with a molded silicone ridge on the inside that is designed to drop into that groove. Get a replacement clamp from Clay too. When putting the pipe into the boot, make extra sure the ridge drops into the groove all the way around then put the clamp over where the ridge is.

Yes sir it is. I thought about it to. I don't like the idea of putting a foreign metal ring that close to falling into the intake. My boot has the molded ridge already. The boot doesn't slip, just the clamp. I want to get a full boot replacement kit. All of my boots have oil coming out around them. Even the spider to plenums boots. Question is what color on red pipes......?
Black probably. Red would blend in too much I think. Blue maybe..... What other colours does he sell?🤔

Hmmm. And the clamp keeps wanting to slip up on the boot towards the end of the pipe? The pipe shouldn’t be that squishy. Are you sure it isn’t cracked?

I inspected it and couldn't find any issues. The pipe might just be squishy from being bent and bent back into place. Who knows if that happened before I got the truck. Maybe that's why it happened to me in the first place. Might need a new pipe.
