Six speed has a cooler due to internal pump as I understand. Mind the line locations so you can replicate.
Does it use same flywheel and clutch setup? How about that spacer adapter?
The NBS trucks with the ZF6 did not use the dual mass pieces of crap that the ZF5s got. They used a single mass, and if I'm not mistaken the input shaft is larger than on 6 spd., I know the output shaft is larger. Also the ZF6 does not use the spacer between the block and the tranny that the ZF5 uses.
Nice find! I run 550 springs on mine. There is not much give. It hauls 18000 lbs nice, but empty it is rough. I don't drive it much though, just towing. It really isn't a lot worse than my stock 97, surprisingly. These trucks ride pretty rough in stock form anyway.

yep, I pulled the cooler lines before the trans. Uses a different flywheel/clutch than the zf5, and I have the correct adapter which is smaller than the zf5 adapter

that’s kind of my thought, how much worse than stock can it really be? Haha
give me a ring when you want to bs and grab a beer and do valve springs. I still have that valve for the heater core block off if you want it
Will do! I’m booked the next 3-4 weekends, but I’m hoping to do the springs, pushrods, and some misc uvc stuff before winter. I’ll definitely let you know when so that you can come drink my beer

I'll let you do the heavy lifting on the springs! They aren't bad with the actual tool though. Should be easier a second time around since I've done them lol
Only problem child is #7. Have to remove the evap box

Sounds like a plan! My last couple of projects my neighbor hung out and got frustrated watching me fail and just took over, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the same happened on this project haha

Long as there is beer and good times involved we will get it done man!
Well, the last month or so has been nuts in terms of how much garage time I’ve gotten (I suppose that tends to happen when you no longer have a girlfriend to entertain lol). First garage project was to organize the damn place. My roommate pulled the diffs out of his 4Runner in the middle before we moved in expecting parts in 2 weeks…. More like 4 months later it’s out. Left bay will always be for projects and tools. Middle bay is for the roommates 4Runner and major projects, and right bay is for the Tacoma unless the middle bay has a big project, then my roommate will park there. And the back portion is full of parts.
Almost immediately after it got organized and cleaned, a friends motor popped in is 1989 4Runner. Block should be back from the machine shop on Monday for reassembly.
AND, what you all would care about! This morning I was feeling unmotivated while babysitting trades at work, so I went online and printed the service manual for a 1999 ZF6. Came home and cracked it open. Rollers from bearings fell all over the place when I pulled the center section out. And holy hell, that thing is heavy. I’d guess the middle section is at least 225#. Got to the point where I need jaw pullers with 10” of reach. The ford puller is $330, so I’m going to see if I can make some extensions for the rental puller I grabbed from autozone. Can’t say I know what I’m doing, but it definitely has been a more simple process than I anticipated. The case will get pressure washed tomorrow, and hopefully I’ll finish pulling the gears and synchros off so I can order a rebuild kit that has everything I need!
Neat! Are you doing just bearings and syncros? Does it use three shift rails? I must be overlooking an internal for OD and R, as they are on the back side of the case. I can pick out gears 3 and 4 (direct) for sure as well as what I believe are 2 and 1, counting Low as its own separate. Low should be the largest gear on the mainshaft and 5 the smallest which I guess is right against the center support?
Getrag ODs (well the strong 265/6s) use a center plate like this ZF, which is a center support in that case.
I never finished my write up rebuilding my S5-47, maybe I should. 30k later or so, still no issues!
