You are making gains quickly!! It took me alot longer when I was working on mine. In the body/paint stage now. When I save up enough hopefully. Trying to get my boy’s 1960 SWB drivable by fall. Putting in a 272 with 113 heads with ram horns. Should run nicely. Looking forward to your next project!
That sounds like a neat project. Do you have a thread here I can read up on?
More progress today. I had to retime the cam because the crank gear moved a spline. I did time the marks right but the cam & crank timing was wacked! Glad I caught it during lifter installation!
Finally got those heads on! Had to chase all the holes- oil pan bolt holes, head bolt holes & timing cover holes. That took a while too.
Looks like my valvetrain geometry is good. Got the rest painted and rockers installed... The rest is just assembling so it should be ready to go in the truck tomorrow. Heart transplant almost complete.
I’m running out of excuses and tasks that help me procrastinate. Honestly I am holding off to see if the front clip has to come off for painting. Fender bolt removal does not look fun and time will tell which way I go with it. One added benefit to removing the radiator support is not having to go so high with the engine to install it.
Since you're backing up to painting I have a question. You used urethane base coat/clear coat on the ttailgate. Do you have to color sand after base coat or after clear? I want to try it on next project. Neighbor used single stage but has to color sand and buff.

The last sanding is before the basecoat on the primer with 600 grit wet. Once starting the base, tack rag and go for each coat of base & clear. If I were to sand the basecoat it would interrupt the metal flake and pearl.
Exception is if you wont be finishing completely within the cure window. I skip that issue and make sure I have adequate time to complete within the 2hr window after each coat all the way to all desired coats of clear. Thats not 2hr total, its since last coat which restarts the clock.

When you are ready to paint the truck, maybe a step by step for those of us that grew up spraying low tech paints. So, does the base coat dry fast? Or does the clear go on before it dries completely? And, do you spray multiple base coats? Sorry, but looking at your tail gate it looks like you know how to do it.

Thanks for the compliment! I will try to illustrate the steps in close detail as it unfolds. If anything is not clear or needs further description please feel free indicate what is not clear as the project progresses.
I have been too busy to work on my project this month (Im sure some people can relate) but did acquire the new front windshield to install after the paint is done. Neighbor Kids with bb guns should be severely disciplined for shooting and cracking/chipping my original windshield! I guess its a small rental fee for storing it in my mother-in-law’s covered shed since 2000...
Busy crummy summer with Covid19 issues to slow things further. After taking a break to tend real life, I have decided to make it run and operate before paint. Not only will it facilitate moving it around but why paint yard ornaments?
