Is that why you have to keep the battery unhooked so it won't take off on ya? lol

I like that one! Very observant spurredon, I didn’t notice the terminals until your joke.

Instrument Voltage Regulator Conversion

Here is the process I used to convert a bad Instrument Voltage Regulator (IVR) from the bi-metallic contact to solid state chip. The IVR I decided to run my test on was a unit that was burned out and provided constant 12vdc instead of 5vdc. Smd123 told us about the LM8705 IC chips being cheap and good for this application. 15 chips cost less than $7 from Amazon.

The bad unit and new Lm7805 chip before install

Opened the can to expose the old circuit

I cut about half off each runner so I have something to solder to. Scuffed them up so they accept solder.

I cut three 1.25” long wires: black = ground, Red=12vdc from key (male ign pin) Yellow=5vdc output (female)

I used shrnkwrap to keep the wires isolated Red soldered to ign pin on board Black riveted to the housing Yellow soldered to the output pin

Bent the wires while hot for less struggling later The hole in my housing is where the chip with ground on top is riveted. This should also act as heat synq if the chip heats up any.

Pic of riveted chip & ground

Check the board output before installing in the truck

Pic of wires to the pins

Operating full scale with float arm up fully. I did adjust the float stroke to get full scale.

Nice pictorial and description. I really should do that I think. My needle stays just above 1/2 tank when the tank is full. I have messed with everything else on it. Too bad Radio Shack stores aren't around anymore! lol

Spurredon, did you test your fuel gage itself with 3vdc to be sure it shows full? If it does, then test the voltage output if your ICVR (Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator) which should be around 5volts DC. If its producing 2-3 vdc it will provide low fuel readings. I got 15 chips on Amazon for less than $7 so I have extras if you want one.

Fuel Tank Wrestling

I removed the tank today and cleaned it out. Those mice left a few nuts behind it too (obviously 1/2” critters). The fuel I poured out wasnt fit to burn... more like diesel. I also got a nice helping of carbon granular bits out.

BMC

Ready to come out

Rodents are everywhere but evicted! Note the rubberized coating behind the tank on the wall mainly where the straps touch.

Looks like good fuel filters are in my future... And lots of them.

Mice can get into tiny places. We had an outdoor cat in the past. We traveled for business and left those dry food feeders and a water bowl with float valve. I found cat food in the craziest places, like an empty tool box with drawers full of cat food. Funny but no cat now and no mice. Defeated purpose of cat having food source for mice. They like to chew automotive wiring too.

Did you put bedliner behind your tank too JohnNewb? wheres the rest of your truck!?!
LOL

Its OK if everyone thinks Im crazy and stupid. I am not building this project for them to drive! Ha! I also put never-seize on every bolt regardless of what it is so it can come apart easier later.

Mine is s work truck. I used spray can bedliner behind tank and brush on bedliner on floor. Had to haul cab on trailer to have windshield and back glass installed. Mobile guy would not come out past Barstow. Rest of body in garage, chassis and bed outside, motor in pieces on stand.

Im not building mine to be a trailer queen either. I figure if you cant use it then its a museum piece... and we only need a few of those. Mine will haul, tow, and participate in all normal truck activities. I figure it provided those tasks the last 60 years, it will be fine to carry on! I can always decide restore it in the event of wanting to. I call my project a repair and refresh not restore.
