I just got back from my local dealer, who quoted me a price of $115 for all 4 new pads.
While I was there I noticed they have a new display for klean wheels in the parts department. $45 a pair = $90 total. So they are only $25 cheaper than new pads.
Everywhere I look on the internet as well as the dealers, the kleen wheels are around $40 a set.
If your rotors need to be turned because they arn't smooth then the turning may be covered under warranty because the pads didn't do their job as designed to "keep the rotors smooth" as per the TSB above.
your Expeditions look like CRAP going down the road. People don't have the time or energy to to clean their wheels every couple of days.
I spent $40,000 on a new, top of the line Expedition, and having it look like crap after shortly after washing (black front wheels) bothers the crap out of me.
JUST BOUGHT MY LAST FORD!!!
Obviously Ford doesn't care what their roducts look like, so I won't either. I am in the market to buy a new full-size pickup too. But, it won't be a Ford. My parents are getting to buy a new SUV also, and after seeing mine turn black (running boards too), they laughed at FORD and said "no thanks".
Sherwood said they could hear a squeek, but couldn't fix it. A call to the manager fixed that. They also didn't believe me in the beginning about the brake dust issue.
Massy's customer service advisors need some help with their "people skills" My truck was down there for 18 days and nothing was fixed. An email to the service managers boss seemed to have solved that issue. There are still unresolved service issues which should be fixed as soon as some parts come in. (Entire passenger seat being replaced, backordered until Feb)
Purchased explorer from Preston Ford but they were to far to drive from O.C. Sherwood tried several times to fix clunk in 4wd system...finally replaced drive shaft yoke.
My family knows Carlton Massy from way back, my grandfather would order new truck every two years & new Town Car every 5.

I totally agree. It's sad to see so many vehicles that cost so much money look so bad because of a bad engineering decision. You would think they would jump at the chance to get some of those dirty looking rims off the road by changing the pads for free.
While I haven't changed the brake pads on my '03, I don't know if there would really be a SIGNIFACANT reduction in dust on the wheels if I did. I say this because I believe that the wheel design is largely to blame for this brake dust condition. It would appear to me that the airflow through the wheel spokes and the proximity of the brake disc/caliper in relation to the wheel causes brake dust to land right on the wheel. I think the most effective solution would be to use Kleen Wheels, which I won't or buy aftermarket wheels that have airflow characteristics that bring air from the outside in, rather than the other way around as do the stock wheels. If anybody has experience with a brake pad that really does reduce dust significantly, please post it!
I dont agree that it's the wheel design because if you look at any 2003 Expedition and/or Navigators, they both have severe dust issues and on different wheels. Also, vehicles with custom wheels have the issue.
As I stated, I will be having my pads replaced on 1/14. I'll keep everyone posted.
Anyone have a picture of the expedition wheels with Kleen Wheels behind it, please email me a pic at ddionisio@sbcglobal.net.
