I was just informed by my advisor that the parts are not available yet. This was after I had to listen to his expertise about how "no problems are known", "dust is normal", "you must be riding your brakes", etc. These guys sure drive me nuts. Sites like FTE are a great. I'd hate to own my Expy without some real information to counter the typical SA "expertise"........

If in fact they are available, I'd like nothing better than to revisit him and his boss.....

Thanks All.

Steve

Thanks for the part number..I will be calling the service manager in the morning.

He did acknowledge and confirm the problem with the brake pads. He had received some new pads but could not confirm if they are intended for the ssm. He has to replace the pads that are specified to satisfy the ssm or he will not get paid for the warranty work. I believe him.

I will keep everyone posted tomorrow.

Thanks

Hey Everyone!!!

Just confirmed that the part number is valid. I have an appointment for the 26th.

The service manager stated that the new pads are only for the front pads. The SSM is not covering the rear pads which I am ok with..the rears are not that bad.

He has a set in stock and I am very happy..

So go call you dealer and have them order that part number and off you go..

Again, confirmed...he punched that number in his system and the part is available!!

Merry Christmas and thanks 007sbcglobal!!!

Is your dealer doing this as a warranty job, and if so, how many miles do you have on your truck? I'm about to turn 18k so I'd really like to know if they're going to try to shaft me, or fix the darned things...

FireFyter...

They should be replacing them under the 3/36 warranty that you have.

They will be covering this under warranty...

I called the dealer the day I brought the vehicle home and told him I was not happy.

I went through numeous song and dances from the dealer stating that ford considers it to be normal.

Come to find out, the dealer was not aware of the SSM. I found the SSM on this forum and asked hi to look it up..

Once he did, they agreed to fix it, but only when the pads became available.

I had marked my calendar to call him after the holidays but then noticed that 007sbcglobal had his done last week..I called withthe part number and they were able to confirm the warranty fix.

They should fix it under the normal warranty period..

and I have 4k miles..

Be nice, firm and persistent..they have to fix it...

remember it's not an official recall..they would never admit that..it would be too costly...the SSM states that the pads will be available to customers that find the excessive dust objectionable..

tell them you do and want them replaced..

Good Luck

I obviously needed to purchase my 04 Expy from your dealer. I just called mine and tried to get them to special order mine using that part #. It was only a service advisor, but he was not going to budge on it. I will have to speak with the Service Manager directly and try and get it ordered.

You wouldn't happen to be in Southern California, So I can take mine there and get the pads replaced.

If the advisor didn't want to help you, and the manager refuses as well, you should call one of these numbers:

I emailed my dealers Service Director, the manager above the Service Manager. He said the following about the part number listed above:

The part number you have listed is the part # for the original brake pads that the truck comes through production with. This is not the pad that will be used for correcting SSM #17247. Our parts manager is aware of this concern and the bulletin and has looked into the situation. The information available to him states that if it is necessary to replace pads due to wear then use part # 2l1z-2001BA . This will not correct concern stated in SSM#17247. The corrected part is not expected to be released until after Dec. 31, 2003.

Hello,

My pads got done today. The part number that was used was the same as 007sbcglobal. The service manager stated that it's the part number. He also replaced several other expeditions today.

The dealer also turned the rotors, found a bad window seal, and detailed the rims to new. The service I received was outstanding!

As far as the brake dust, I have only driven the vehicle approx 30 miles and no brake dust. I can notice the difference already.

Before, I would drive the vehicle a couple of miles and the rims were covered in brake dust.

I will know for sure in the next few days, but I have noticed a difference already.

I will keep everyone posted.

Sounds good except the part about turning the rotors. I have 3K on mine and the rotors are already scoring. I think the original pads are too hard on the discs and what is collecting on the wheel is brake DISC dust as well as the pad dust. Turning the rotors will be necessary to remove the scoring and to give the new pads a proper breaking-in. Trouble is, when the rotors are turned, it severely shortens the rotor service life. I am going to do everything I can to get the dealer to warranty new rotors along with the pads.

alpha...would it be possible to get the parts department to tell you the part number that was used? We're being told that the part number that 007 used is the number for the orig. pads.

Bad window seal? Was it your drivers side window, and was there window rattling or something like that going on. I have an 04 and have brought it in twice and still not fixed.

For all, if this did stop the brake dust why must we get different service from different dealerships? It's killing me.

Hi,

I brought the vehicle in for 2 reasons.

1. I have a window rattle/noise onthe drivers side. I was waiting for the arrival of the brake pads to have the window looked at. They confirmed that the noise is coming from a bad/loose window seal. They have ordered the part and I will need to go in a later date.

2. Excessive Brake Dust: I was told by my dealer to check back for the new pads around the beginning of the new year. I saw the posting by 007sbcglobal that he got the new pads so I called my dealer to see if they were available since 007 and myself are in CA. The dealer told me that he could not confirm that they were available and asked to get a part number. I got the part number and he said that he did have them. He also stated that he looked in oasis to see if the pads were specified for the SSM. He said to bring the vehicle in to have new pads installed.

Now..the verdict...I personally do not believe that these are the new pads. I have driven the vehicle almost 100 miles today and I can see brake dust beginning to accumulate onthe front wheels. When you look at the difference in brake dust between the front and rear, you can tell that the front accumulate much more brake dust than the rear, thus I feel that they did not put the new improved pads on.

The amount of brake dust is far less than before..however I still find it unacceptable. I also have 2001 F150 Supercrew and the amount of brake dust on my truck, which hasn't been washed in 2 weeks (because of rain I like my truck clean), is less than the amount of brake dust on the front wheels after on day of normal driving.

So..I think I will ease my frustration by having a nice set of aftermarket pads installed. The cost of new pads is not worth the frustration and inconvenience. My dealer has been very understanding and nice, but I don't think they get all the information from Ford at times.

I will check with my personal mechanic to see what pads he recently installed on my truck and I will have the same brand installed on the expedition.

Anyone out there install after market pads for their expedition, please let me know.

Thanks
