I thought "radial mount" and "axial mount" meant the same thing. So, let me be more clear - I've changed the entry to "pivot mount". Does that work?

You're an engineer.

If something is axial, it is aligned with the axis of rotation.
i.e. the shaft of the alternator.

If something is radial it passes through the axis of rotation at 90*.

The side mount alternators would best be described as 'tangential mount'

Pivot mount alternators have mounting bolts that parallel the shaft(axis)of the alternator.

This is the default config if I can't get the 460 brackets to work. It has the Saginaw pump using the Windsor C2 water pump bracket and a car-style PS pump bracket, pivoting on the hole I drilled and tapped in the AC bracket. The AC compressor is an old, probably FS6, unit just to give perspective.

You can see that the snorkels clear fine. The only potential issue might be the space between the compressor and the PS pump for the lines to the compressor to make their bend. I've included Classic's picture again for reference, but it looks to me like their compressor sits inboard further than the one I have is sitting in the picture. But I have 2 1/2" between the compressor and the pump's cap, which is about where the lines would be. However, I think their compressor will sit ~1" further inboard so that will provide extra clearance. In any event I think I can work around it because they have several different clockings of the compressor and different angles on the fittings.

That's one heck of an arrangement Gary! It's good you have a layout you more or less already know will work, in case these other experiments don't. However it will be interesting to see how the Poly-Vee goes together and I think it will be good information for others.

Here is a photo of the driver's side bracket in the E-350 from the junkyard. I noticed several of these have a very interesting oil cooler that you can just make out in the bottom center of the photo. It bolts to the oil filter fitting on the block, then has a little box that the lower radiator hose is piped through, then the oil filter itself screws on a few inches away from its usual location, now facing forward. You can just see the black oil filter in the picture.

I snagged this whole setup from the same van but couldn't find a lot of information about it and ultimately decided not to use it on my truck (although it would have conveniently solved my filter relocation issue to boot). The idea seems kind of good, but some people said they weren't comfortable introducing that many more extra leak points, not to mention the possibility of oil and water mixing (this latter concern I don't think is all that likely).

Anyway, maybe the wisened old timers here will have a comment about these oil coolers. You will probably see one in the yard.

(PS: I repped Bill)

Luke, that's a real good shot of the left side brackets. no AC I see from the idler. That oil cooler, look in the 385 forum for repeated oil cooler failures, it is a problem going somewhere to happen. I took the one from the 1990 parts truck and left it off, I have the 1988-early 1990 air to oil cooler installed on mine.

If you find a 1992 up with the larger water pump pulley bolt circle, I would like to get one for my new engine when I build it.

BTW, thanks for the rep points.

Jim - I missed your post about axial, radial, etc. Yeah, I may think like an engineer but I get confused with those terms - obviously.

Kyle - Thanks. It'll work but none of the belts will be the stock length. So, three more things to include on the list of parts, when the time comes.

Luke - So that's what that heat exchanger looks like. I've heard horror stories about them them - no thanks! As for the 460 brackets, I am curious whether they'll work on the M. I'd love to go with a poly-vee arrangement. They obviously are better than v-belts and I think they clean the engine up a bunch. And, I wouldn't have three odd-sized belts. But, if it doesn't work then I do have a backup plan that will work. And, IMHO, it looks better than the stock config as that has the field goal for the AIR pump and the three-piece sliding bracket for the PS pump.

Bill - So 88 - 90 460's had an air/oil cooler. Did it bolt onto the oil filter spot like the later one?

Well glad I dodged that bullet then. But it's too bad, because it's a neat idea, and very compact.

Today I got what I think is the last piece of the parts ordered from Tim - the Weiand intake. At first look the runners seem a lot taller than those of the Eddy, and the carb looks to sit higher. I'll check it out on Father's Day as I'm going up to see my father tomorrow.

That one looks a lot different than mine. Which did you get exactly?

Weiand Action Plus, #8010. Says it has a torque range from idle to 6000. Which one do you have?

Yes it uses an adapter drilled and tapped for the fittings and a bypass valve. Green arrows are flow direction to and from the cooler.

Thanks. I was curious but don't think I want all of the extra complexity as I don't think the engine lube will be getting all that hot. But, I might watch for it on the bone yard crawl.

Police cars with the 429 and 460 engines used them, 429 SCJ engines and a lot of the bigger stuff with the 370 and 429 engines also.
