I've rebuilt a few big diesel's and replacing pistons and liners are common, replacing rods are not. From my old "go fast" days, if there was no physical damage, such as bent rod, spun bearing etc, I would not replace the rods but they ALWAYS get checked for cracks, straightness and to insure that things are round.
Bob at performance blocks. I think they r gonna b a place to remember. I just dropped off the block, crank n bed plate. He mic'ed the pistons n cylinders while I waited. And he let me take pics. His son is there also, and he said he'd snap some pics while its being worked on. He got out some tools and started measuring
And the verdict is,,,,, .0035 on the taper. I'm goin 10 over.
It felt good that while I was there,,, a set of valve guides showed up there for another 6l he's doin. I noticed the overhaul kit doesn't come with cam bearings. He had these on his table. They're ford also
Here's their boring, honing machine. It's got honing bits on them right now.
These are the boring stones.
So guys, I'm feeling pretty good right now. I'm parked at the dealer bout to go in and spend about 4k on the parts. Hopefully less,,,
I know these guys aren't vendors,,, http://www.performanceblocks.com/
I have no idea what's involved in becoming a vendor, but maybe they'd b interested in it. They said they do shipping, and just like staying busy (its just Bob n his son that work there). Bob said hed like to have more help, but it sounded like hes as picky as me about who does the work that his name is on. Maybe if enough of us call them, they will poney up the $$$$, or whatever it takes to become vendors.
I guess I gotta see what the finished product is gonna look like.
They are gonna do the heads, then short block it. I'm gonna torque the studs n finish it.
$3940,,, overhaul kit,5 cam bearings, 4 lifter kits, 16 pushrods, 16 valve bridges, 6 center rocker arm kits, 4 end rockers, 16 exhaust valves, 16 intake valves, 32 valve springs, 64 valve spring keeper things, 32 valve spring washers. Wow, um ok. It outta be a good engine after this.
This works as a dent puller. I've got the blocks of wood close to the outer diameter of the seal. I was worried about breaking the rear cover. I hit it from the inside out. Duh. Sometimes I'm too careful.
They're gonna glass bead (i think thats what he called it) the covers n rocker boxes. Anyone know anything about the process that involves??? Could it mess anything up. They should look brand new. That will be cool.
What are you going to do about installing that seal?
Corey(creator), the guy that did a Blackwater engine said I could use his tools. That's awesome. He might need them so he doesn't want to sell them. I put a call in to Gary at Metro Ford in independence mo, I took my Dually in there for all the warranty work and got to know them. The service there is great. They might let me bring my engine in and have the tech install them with the engine in the back of the truck. Not sure about how much that will b tho. I'd love to use Corey's tools. Hope it works out to do that.
