Great news! I took a deep breath before opening this thread. Be sure to let Ron know he has lots of family all over the country praying for him and anxious for a full recovery.
Thanks Guys! I was worried all day and was nervous when Ron's wife answered the phone. I was relieved when she gave me the news. He is still not out of the woods but I think he is on his way to a slow recovery.
Ron is like a father figure to me. He is an interesting man. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper joining the 11th Airborne a few years after WWII. He had a stellar 30-year career on the Chicago Fire Department. He fought a lot of big fires in the 60's & 70's. He received the Carter Harrison Medal for defusing a bomb on September 25, 1969. An unknown person placed a bomb underneath a bench in the Civic/Daley center. The bomb was made up of 17 sticks of dynamite wired to a clock. The Fire and Police departments were both notified. The Police Bomb Squad was responding to another call. The Fire Department had just formed its bomb squad. Members of the Squad were in the process of being trained, but most had little or no experience. Fireman Ron DiRenzo, with limited experience and a few tools, was able to disarm this explosive device prior to detonation.
Here he is receiving the medal in October 1970 at city hall during fire prevention week.
Whew!
Its ok of its slow as long as its forward progress.
I'm very glad to hear that he's moving forward. When you talk to him let him know that we are all pulling for him.
Thanks Bobby. He is still in ICU so I will call him when he gets in a regular room. His wife did receive the book and brought it to the hospital. He has been looking at it and really likes it! I am so glad he got the chance to see it completed.

This is great news Keith. Your book is good medicine too...
