Very sad news indeed. Sorry to read this post. Ron was obviously a great man, a living legend and a great part of the history of your truck.

May he rest in peace.

Thanks again everyone. Ilya, I wish I could get the truck up to Ron. Its just too far and would cost too much. I would love to be able to do that for him.

How about ringing the bell on the truck five times (Patrol #5) for Ron? We've got an old bell at our farm mounted on a pole. I'm going to ring it five times tonight. I never met Ron but I certainly respect what he did and his love for that truck.

Rob,

That is an excellent idea. I am going to suggest they ring the FIP bell that the museum has at his funeral!!

Since the logistics of getting the truck up to the funeral are just unfeasible I think ringing the Patrol Bell would be a fitting tribute.

Thank you for sharing his story along with your truck's story. He will be missed

Bobby

Thanks Bobby. Ron's wife asked me if i could help write a brief story of Ron's life for the Chicago Tribune Obits ( which is no cost to her) unlike the death notice which is $350 for 20 lines. I am trying to put something together for her. What an interesting life he had. Joined the military underage. The military found out and his mother had to sign him in. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 11th airborne. When he was discharged he joined the Coast Guard and served as a radioman during the Korean War. He was a bus driver for the Chicago Transit and Greyhound. He was a licensed electrician and had a company RD Electrics. And of course his 28 years on CFD and 5 on the Patrol.

Look what I found on ebay today. I have been looking for a green bulb for my bumper lights for over a year. I didn't think they made any. On the day of Ron's funeral, the man whose idea it was to put lights on the bumpers, these lights show up. Maybe just a coincidence!! Roto Rays Par 46 Replacement Bulb Green | eBay

We were out at the truck yesterday for a few hours. We replaced the cheap, so called stainless steel home depot rear bin hinges with some good quality made ones. We got lucky, the holes lined up exactly. Got a bunch of small jobs done like fabricating a leather strap for the fire ext holder, mounted a fire ext in the cab, installed the compartment door holders etc. I forgot my camera so no pics to show. The list for final completion is almost done.

Nice score on finding the green bulb.

Working on an old truck is good therapy. I'm glad you were able to get a lot of those little piddly items taken care of
