Not sure if it can be swapped on. The friend whose fire truck caught on fire told me yesterday that someone not far from where I live rebuilt the generator on his dads 34 ALF. When his dad come back from his cruise in a few days I will get the man's number from him and give him a call.
Bobby, I dropped the generator off at another local shop last Monday. I will call tomorrow to see whats happening.
I have another cool story to share: You guys remember a few years ago when I was able to get a family's Patrol retirement badge back to them? Well, I have a similar story. Last week a friend in Chicago gave me a heads-up about a Patrol Lieutenants helmet for sale on eBay. It was from a Lieutenant who worked at Patrol 3 and his initials were G.C. I checked the Patrol roster I have and it listed the man. The man's son bought my Patrol book in 2008 and I still had his email address. I immediately sent him an email and tried to find call him. The phone number was no good. This was Sunday and the auction ended the following Friday. I still had his address but figured if I send him a letter it would not get there in time before the auction ended. I called my sister who lives a few suburbs over and had her send him out a letter which I knew would get there in a few days. I never heard a word from the son and the auction ended. Saturday morning I called my friend to see if he won the helmet. He said he didn't but might know who it was. A few hours later I got a call from the son. He was out of town (vacationing close to me)and missed out on the auction. He said his Dad passed 12 years ago but he has been searching for that helmet for 35 years. I told him I might know who has it and would see if he would sell it to him. I called my friend back and told him the story and he called the auction winner. It looks like the guy will sell the helmet to the son. He just wanted to make sure he wasn't being scammed and it was legit. He got the son's number and was going to give him a call. I hope it all works out and the helmet makes its way back to the family! Now mind you the Patrol has been disbanded since 1959 and after all these years it shows up. The ad said it came from an estate. Here is the auction ad... it went for some good money! http://www.ebay.com/itm/221977832916?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Called the second generator shop and they were unable to do anything with it. They said they searched for parts and couldn't find any. I'm back to square one. I guess I'll be sending it off to Oregon.
Interesting story on the Helmet. Hopefully it works itself back to the family.
I'll be danged, I wouldn't think it would be that hard to get a generator repaired. Here is a link to a local shop here in Albuquerque. They have been in business forever and they have been my go to source for anything related to starting and charging systems for years. http://hctruckelectricalservice.com/
It might be worth giving them a call.
What did the shop say was wrong with it? is it just worn brushes and bearings/bushings? or does it need field windings or a stator? If its just simple parts maybe these guys can find them. If so then I could ship them to you and you could overhaul your generator.
Really, they didn't do much at all. The guy said he was looking for parts ie 12 volt fields and couldn't find anything. He said he has been doing this for 45 years and hasn't seen a generator like this one. He did say its a Ford generator. Cant make out what this is. Thanks for the link Bobby!
Keith,
Its kind of a short stubby thing isn't it?
It'd be worth giving H&C a call, maybe sending them those pictures. They have some pretty sharp old timers there that know their stuff.

I'll keep my fingers crossed

Thanks Bobby. I haven't given H&C a call yet. I spent 40 minutes on the phone today with Dave from yesteryearautoparts. He was extremely helpful and was recommended from the 2nd generator shop. Dave gave me a number of a guy in my area who may know some competent generator re-builder in my area. I called that guy and brought him the generator this afternoon. He will see if he can do anything and I will know something in the morning. Hopefully he will be able to take care of my issue.
