Moe, I will see what Dave has to say.

Bobby, I got a hold of the person who runs the union newsletter and she agreed to put an ad in the next issue. I will put something together for her. My ads in the Chicago Fire Museum Newsletter picked up a few pre-orders.

Ilya, I posted articles on numerous firefighter websites like Firehouse and Firefighter Nation with little results. I will repost again and look for additional sites.

I only need 60 more orders and with a little more exposure that is possible. Once the book is printed, I will be able to sell additional copies at shows and events.

I agree that Fire Apparatus Journal (FAJ) should be approached . . . They are great people and have always been very willing to provide national exposure to niche market books such as yours. Also, the national antique fire engine collectors club SPAAMFAA may be able to help as well . . . And if you don't belong to your local chapter or the National club (or both), you should. These are just a couple of possible outlets. Another is FSP publications. All of these places were very helpful to me with my last book. Good luck.

Ok I'm really motivated to get this book printed now. I joined SPAAMFAA last night. Contacted them about putting a free ad on their website. A few years ago, the organizations quarterly magazine called Enjine! Enjine! did a review of my first book.

Here it is: History of the Chicago Fire Insurance Patrol 1871-1959 by Keith M. Seafield & Michael A. Pack is a comprehensive documentation of this privately financed element of fire protection in Chicago. A simple statement of the Patrol’s purpose was “to save property.” Established on October 2, 1871, the Patrol was in service for six days before the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871. It then continued to be an active participant on the Chicago fireground until its disbandment on June 29, 1959. At its maximum size in the late 1920’s, there were nine companies. Since a patrol company responded on all still alarms, the patrol’s were quite active, with the annual report for 1943 indicating that the seven companies responded to 13,563 alarms during that year.
The book starts with a series of 4 full page color photographs of the Patrol stations taken by Ken Little in 1959 just after the Patrol disbanded. The following 43 pages of color pictures (mostly full page) show apparatus, fireground scenes, badges, and other aspects of the Patrol activities. The history of the Patrol is covered in a 53 page chapter. The following 12 chapters provide a detailed insight in the workings of the Patrol.
The authors interviewed many of the surviving members of the Patrol and use these interviews to provide pictures of the close personal relationships within the Patrol and also the close relationship between the Patrol and the Chicago Fire Department. There were two major tracks for many of the new patrolmen. Some made a career of the Patrol while others used their patrol experience as a good background for becoming members of the Chicago Fire Department. A number of stories illustrate the Patrol’s involvement in actual fire fighting, particularly when responding on one engine still alarms, the Patrol would take a second line off the engine. In many of the stories the retired Patrol members talk more about their firefighting that about the Patrol type functions.
Since the Patrol was privately funded, the Chief was given some latitude in its operations. The first Captain (chief) was Benjamin B. Bullwinkle. One of his innovations was the development of a chute which enabled the driver to slide down from the bunkroom to a platform above the floor next to the driver’s seat on the apparatus. The driver could then control the hitching of the horses as it was accomplished by another patrolman. A second device when activated by the alarm system pulled all the of bed clothing from the bunks of the sleeping Patrolmen. The mechanism was powered by a 750 pound weight that had to be rewound upon return of the Patrolmen so that the blankets might be retrieved from the ceiling.
Although other books have been written on this subject, this volume is the most detailed description of an individual Patrol. Considering the depth of research involved in preparing this book, it must have been a labor of love for the authors.

I just contacted the reviewer and asked if he could review my newest book. I am thinking about putting a 1/2 page ad in their magazine (only$75). As I mentioned before, an ad will be coming out in my union newsletter. A division Chief who I know stopped by the fire house last week. He used to work in the PIO (Public Information Office) and I was thinking about calling him and asking if the department could do a press release like they did 4 years ago when Ron & I were featured on the local news. I think that alone might help the cause!! Thanks guys! I hope it will be enough. I heard back from SPAAMFAA webmaster and she will be posting an ad after the SC convention next week. I was asked to give a seminar there but it wasn't feasible. Maybe next year!

Thanks Bobby. I didn't know about it either. There are some interesting stories to view. I wasn't expecting them to post the story so quickly. I was just putting a feeler out and would have like to give a better story and promote the book. Oh well, still cool tho.

Here is the method I use. I learned it from an old FTE member who, sadly, doesn't come around anymore. You might see references to him (George) or his truck )Earl). He was a great guy and is still a great resource of info.

George's method was as follows.
Open a second browser window and then on any page with a picture you want
Right click on the picture (sometimes, if the picture is a thumbnail you might have to click on the picture once to select it or make it full sized)
On the box that comes up go down to the bottom and select "Properties"
On the Properties box that comes up go to the Address URL and Left click on the URL address 3 times real fast. This will highlight the URL address (or you could "click and drag" to highlight the URL address)
Once the URL address is highlighted Right Click on the address and select copy
Now Click "OK" to close the Properties box.
Open the other browser window with the FTE thread you working on and in the Quick Reply box type whatever you want and then look at the little menu bar above the text box and select the "Insert Image" button (the icon that is the little yellow square with mountains in it)
When you Click on the "Insert Image" button a box will pop up with a Scrip Prompt and in there will be a text box with "http://" highlighted in it
Delete the http:// from the box
Now Right Click in the text box and select "Paste"
this will paste in the address of the picture that you got from the other window.
Hit Enter or click on "OK" and viola, the picture should now be seen inside the text box of the thread.
